Meco has been with us for a few days now, and her heart rate is soemthing we’re trying to adjust to, but tonight it seems higher than normal and she’s acting odd – she nipped my arm and we’ve noticed she hasn’t been drinking much water (we have a bottle AND a crock, just in case, she seems to prefer the crock)

In pathetic paranoia, i’ve attached video   Can someone tell me if i’m insane?

she looks like she is scared that would explain the biting. try giving her her space and let her be and warm up to you on her terms. its stress

Scarred or out of puff…Was she running around? My buns always look like that after a good romp; They drop and lay around like they’re exhausted.

When you took this video was there anything that precluded it, like KK asked about running around. Were you holding her or was she scared of something? If so then this looks like normal “freak out” or “settling down”, but IF NOT, then this is not normal for a relaxed bunny and can signify that something is wrong. This type of breathing is what I noticed in Rucy and I raced her to the vet to find out there was a problem.

Rabbits can also bite if they are in pain.

You said you’ve only had her for a few days. What is her history? For some rabbits, change is very stressful, but again, they shouldn’t be breathing that hard for the majority of the time. Only for a few minutes after some exercise or being stressed/scared.

Has she been eating and pooping?  Rabbits don’t always drink alot of water especially if they have greens in their diet.

When I took the video, she had been laying, statinoary in that spot, for about five minutes.

As for today, we’ve just gotten home ( i have a webcam on her, her breathing was normal all day. yes i’m a freak, but i swear that’s not why we set it up – just a stroke of good luck) but she seems calm. She begged us to let her out when we walked in and she’s hopping around the floor.

I think we perhaps took for granted that she was feeling well adjusted and she might have been a little panicked last night as we shut her cage door behind her. (She usually spends the first 20 minutes of time out of her cage hopping in and out o fit testing the safety zone i think…and we let her do that, but when she’d lost interested, we closed it so that I could clean jit wihtout her interfering (Which she does, ad nauseum) When I thought about it for a while, i figured that might have scared her.

As for her history…we learned a few things about her just from having her around. TV Coitus? TOtally freaks her out. As does laughter…….(M suspects that she may have been privy to children who did obnoxious things to her, then laughed…or possibly the loud, random noises just make her uncomfortable.)

In any case, as she doesn’t seem to be in any immediate danger, we’re giving her her space tonight and NOT cleaning up after her… We’ll see how it goes.

Thanks for your comments and posts. I was worried there might be something wrong with her -she hasn’t had her first vet visit yet and i would feel awfulif something happened to her because we just didn’t know better.

Good point BB, that wouldn’t be normal at all for ‘at rest’ breathing. But if she was scared or nervous, or running about before, pretty normal…

I think what your describing is she’s a little timid and may have been worked up a bit. I’m no vet, but it sounds pretty normal to me

Don’t ever feel like your being paranoid-it’s pertinent to bunny health that we watch like hawks, notice changes and take action quickly. We may look like parnaoid goofs a lot but if we catch something in it’s early stages (which is important) hey, no worries about looking silly those other times.

My buns all freaked out the first few times we watched movies, I guess it was the dark and that we turned it up a bit…You may notice soon that she starts to disregard or totally ignore the TV as she gets used to it….Or she may take to watching it!
