Do you give your rabbit some vitamin tablets, e.g. Papaya enzymes? Do they really need it if they get a variety of hay, pellets and 2-3 different veggies every day? I’m just wondering if I should start giving Loppi some. Our friend has a rabbit and they give him both Papaya and some other vitamins, but I thought they wouldn’t need it if they have a good diet.

As long as you are feeding your rabbit a balanced diet they would never need vitamins and I’m not sure there are any out there anyway made specifically for rabbits.

As for papaya tablets I only use mine as treats – the best thing to keep your rabbits gut moving is the unlimited hay and make sure they drink adequate water. The idea behind papaya tablet is that they may break up the mucous that could cause a possible blockage however there is no scientific proof of this and it really won’t help with motility. Another thing that does help with motility is to try to keep your rabbit active along with the proper diet and unlimited hay.

The only vitamins I’ve ever seen have been marketed for “small animals”, and I would never give those since “small animals” are different species, and what one animal needs, another does not. For example, guinea pigs need added vitamin C, rabbits do not. It’s best to feed a variety like Sarita said and that will ensure that your bun gets everything that is required.

I also use papaya tablets as treats.
