Pancakes is being spayed TOMORROW! what can I expect. UPDATE!

Pancakes is being spayed tomorrow morning.

I have chosen a good vets that is just down the road from my house. She has already been to have a check up with them, and they treated her like a princess.

I have asked them lots of questions – I need to make sure she is well fed before the operation, and they will give me pain meds and a syringe for when she gets home. (When I askedthe vet about this she said that if it was he being spayed, she would definitely want pain relief so will personally make sure Pancakes has some to take home) they also said that they wont give her a cone, as from their experience this just stresses bunnys out.

The vet says that providing she is eating, I can take her home tomorrow evening,

I have changed all her towels in her boxes where she sleeps so they will be clean, but so she has tonight to make them smell of bunny again so they are familiar to her.

I have stocked up on everything she likes to eat most to tempt her with.

She lives in a small room. I dont want to keep her closed in her cage as I am certain this will upset her, but I will remove everything she could possibly jump on.

I was wondering if there is anything else I can do to make it all less horrible for her.

I’m worried about how to administer the pain meds myself, what to do if she wont eat, and about how to handle her to check the wound without hurting pr upsetting her.

I would also appreciate anyone who can tell me what to expect from her when she first comes home.

Both Lady and Sam were really kinda, fuzzy? from the medication. They laid around the first day home ( our vet keeps them 24hours). Second day they were a little more active, and so on until about 4-5 days when they seemed good as new but I had to keep them from running/jumping anyway another 4-5 days. They both loved the medication, its usually honey flavored so they ate it up.
I wasn’t comfortable with picking either up, so I actually found I could check the incision by getting them to stand up on their hind legs onto the xpen (lured with greens sometimes) and looking at it then.

You sound really well prepared That’s actually really good that your vet is going to make sure that Pancakes starts eating before she goes home, it will save you from a lot of stress (Wilbur wouldn’t eat for a while after I brought her home and I was so worried). And pain medicine is definitely necessary in my opinion, I would never take my bunny to a vet that wouldn’t provide a couple days worth. t think your idea of keeping her in the rom rather than cooped up in her cage is a good idea, Wilbur had never been kept locked in her kennel (except for the first couple days after I adopted her) so I just let her out because it was stressing her.

What you can expect is for Pancakes to act a little weird, to be stressed, and in pain (hopefully not too much because of the meds). I am assuming the pain medicine your vet is going to give you is Metacam (or Meloxicam) which is also an anti-inflammatory, it can make them a little nauseous (even though they can’t throw up, so you have to keep that in mind. Pancakes will probably want to just lay somewhere for a while and you should just let her, some like laying in the litter box (it’s a good idea to clean it and wipe it down with vinegar before bringing her home).

Biggest thing to remember is that she will have just gone through a pretty big surgery so if she is aggressive towards you or anything don’t get too discouraged, she’ll be back to normal in no time. Good luck!

Pancakes is HOME!

She was spayed this morning, it was a complete success and the vets let her come home as she was eating (craisins – bu the bucket load )

So I got her home, let her out and she immediately did three poos, and went and stuck her head in her food bowl, then drank practically a whole bowl of water, followed by a big bunch of parsley and cillantro. She had a bit of a gentle cuddle, and even purred. I have left her alone to sleep now, but I’m so please she is OK.

I have some more pain meds to give her tomorrow morning, they said to measure out a certain ammount, and then to squirt it on her food so not t frighten her trying to get a syringe in her mouth.

I just wanted to let you all know she is OK!

I’m so happy for you! I hope my Molly’s spay goes as smoothly…I’m really nervous I hate thinking about it
