we just got our new town calendar for teh new year and there are coupons in it for one of those paint-it-yourself pottery places.  has anyone ever done this for food or water dishes for your bun (or other pet)?  i am assuming that the paint and glaze they use is non-toxic… b/c humans can use the dishes or cups… but what about for buns?  any info on this?

You know what I’ll ask my mom-she took pottery and has a kiln and everything, so I’m sure she knows! I’m going home for lunch, so if she’s home I’ll ask then!

Cool K & K. Yes you will need to be careful with certain paints, glazes and slips. The reds usually are all toxic as they contain lead and there is also concern for magnaese & cobalt not to mention others. I’m finding some good info and neat stuff on this site: http://www.ceramicstoday.com/articles/articles.htm

You could also try asking at the pottery place if they have any specific non-toxic glazes. I bet you are probably not the first to make a dish for a pet, so they may already know which kind is which (tho, be wary of people giving unqualified advice just to get you to paint a dish! )

i was just going to ask them, but like you said, my concern is that they may not really know.  they may just say it’s safe to make the sale.  or… rabbits have such delicate EVERYTHING that even tho it might be safe for Rover or Garfield… it might not be for a bunny.  i may not do it.  i’m not sure i want to take the chance.

I think I would be leery as well unfortunately and I am not sure of the difference between the paints and slips provided in the paint-it-yourself place and the ones used for pet dishes or if there is even one at all.
