I took Scooter in for a pre neuter exam yesterday… The vet mentioned a vaccine for Pasturella. Has anybody had any experiences with this?

Well I haven’t heard of this, but I could sure get on board with it if it’s true, safe and if it works! 0_0 Can’t wait to hear from the forum leaders on this one.

I still have to talk to my vet today about Mimzy’s tests, I’ll ask her if she’s heard anything.

EDIT: So here’s what I Googled up, it seems some testing has been done, but it doesn’t announce a new vaccine, although there are currently ones for calves and sheep, and the only other link I could find about rabbits and P. multocida appeared to be just experimentation on rabbits.

A pasteurella vaccine!? I’m skeptical, but it’d be AMAZING if it’s true!!

I know there have been a lot of studies and trials and the info can be found online.  But I would be hesitant to try a new vaccine on my bunnies which at this point should be low risk.  They have been exposed to each other- but probably no other bunnies anytime soon.

Could be great for rescues, breeders, etc….  Any one else in other countries have their bunnies vaccinated for this?

As far as I knew the only vaccines were Myxi and only available in the Uk….Wouldn’t it be nice if their were vaccines for all this stuff (ok while I’m dreaming lets add coccidia, E.Cuniculi…) sigh…

I’d sooo go for it for the shelter buns. Don’t think I’d bother mine with it, as they don’t get exposed to other bunnies

Well, he did say that it was used mostly in regard to “colonies”. Also, when we spoke about post neuter pain control for Scooter, he said that they don’t usually “bother” unless the bunny is a pet (!) as in I guess they think homeless rescued bunnies that receive neuters don’t feel pain like pets do!!

The vet might have been talking about post-neuter pain meds for colony rabbits- wild bunnies that are fixed and then released back to the colony.  It might be stressful for them to be handled (caged and given meds)  and they have a better recovery if they are given a pain med injection at time of surgery and then released back to the colony as soon as possible.   I am guess this is what he is refering to- if he talked about colony bunnies.

Oh, that makes sense. I guess too much medicine might change their smell too and cause problems that way also.
