I think i made a mistake lol. I got a bag of oxbow hay for Hammer as a treat since its expensive. I didnt intend for him to have oxbow as a permanent hay brand… but he is on strike! He picked out oxbow for his mix and ate only oxbow. I figured he was just spoiling himself for a while and it would stop. Yep i was wrong.. Im sure you all know where this is goin. His priceless oxbow is gone.. gone Hammer yes gone! He is very angry lol. I bought two other brands, one being his old hay, and he REFUSES to be in the presence of either. He dumps his hay bin and throws it to the next level! I tried to get another bag of oxbow but the pet store that carries it is out and about half an hour away. Ive ordered it through a pet store a few min. away and itll be here in about a week. Until then ive tried to make his temperary hay fun but that was a no go and only got me bunny butts and denied grooming offers. Has anyone else been through this lol. And will he be ok for a week without hay. I keep putting it in there in case he really really needs it but as of now he is looking at it like a disgusting attempt at a edible hay! The royal Sir Hammer will not eat this low class hay, it would simply be embarrasing and degrading.

Oh dear! ^_^ Mimzy and Pip pulled this with me when I’d gotten them the wheat hay from Binky. For the longest time they WOULD NOT eat anything else. Now they turn their noses up at the wheat and only want timothy or orchard. Picky things!
i kind of doubt Hammer will starve himself for the sake of propriety. Maybe hand feeding him will make him feel a little more spoiled until his ‘precious’ returns.

Little Kit did that, but with pellets. The awful pet store I got him from was feeding him “junk food” with little seeds, nuts, and things that look like fruit loops… and when he got home he was beyond miffed at the plain old food I offered him. Took him a couple days, but he did get hungry. Like Mimsy suggested, I did hand feed him a few.. and he refused most of the time but I was successful a few times.

Did you try a small paper bag with holes, and hay and a couple of his fav treats?
Though I’m sure thats what you meant when you said you tried to make it fun..

Well, goodluck. They are finicky little things sometimes.

Oh no – I do find that rabbits can be very particular in their likes and dislikes just like people and you are best to just give in to them unless you want endless bunny tantrums.

“Endless bunny tantrums”! I love it! Isn’t it amazing that creatures that are so quiet–no barking, howling, meowing, snorting, shrieking, etc–can be so VERY LOUD in their own way!

Sorry he conned you into the expensive hay!

i always chuckle at the assumption that bunnies don’t make noise. granted, they make very limited audible noise… but what they say *silently* is so much louder than any bark, howl, meow or purr i’ve ever heard from a dog or cat.

yes i tried the bag with holes, hand feeding, putting it all over the litter box instead of one end, putting it in a roll.. nothing so ill just have to wait till his beloved hay is available. But he will be fine for a week right? i noticed little poos today..

What if you tried another kind of hay? I mean, not another brand, but another variety? For example, my buns do NOT like timothy hay. They would much rather eat oat/wheat/barley. Maybe it’s not the brand, but the variety? Or maybe just giving him a different variety will pique his interest…

Does he eat alfalfa pellets? He needs daily hay, I don’t know about quantity in one so young. His poops may be shrinking because he’s not consuming enough nutrients.
Will he eat treats like willow branches and such?
And what kind of greens do you give him, if any?

He is on unlimited alfalfa pellets and was on unlimited alfalfa hay too. He does enjoy his willow toys from BB. And his tummy is filled twice a day with veggies

Sounds like what I do with mine, minus the alfalfa. Timothy twice daily or more often if necessary. 1/4 cup Timothy pellets per evening and veggies twice a day. And the occasional treat, small piece of carrot, apple or dried fruit
I’d keep an eye on his litter box habits. If he suddenly looks hunched over or nothing seems to be coming out, then a vet trip may be necessary.

I think that at 3 months he’s old enough that you can start giving him some timothy or other grass hays as well- that way he’ll be used to it when you stop feeding alfalfa and it might intrigue him into eating some more right now if it’s new. If he’s eating unlimited alfalfa pellets then you don’t necessarily have to do only alfalfa hay.

oops i didnt answer all the questions MM. he has bok choy, parsley, cilantro, dandelion greens, alfalfa sprouts and mustard greens right now. So i think he is good there. He gave in last night and ate some of the new hay. YAY! He didnt eat as much as usual but im glad he is adjusting for the time being.

Wow! 0_o Your bunny really likes different greens! I’m lucky to be able to get Mimzy to eat kale, parsley and carrot tops, Pip is a stickler for Romaine and Fiver likes just the green lettuce. But it’s not always easy to find good produce here, so when their favorite is out of stock or just too nasty to buy, they’re all out of luck.
Hm. Yup. I’d say his diet is pretty well rounded! ^_^

I can COMPLETELY agree with that. Fern LOVES to wake up at four of five in the morning and DIG and CHEW EVERYTHING in her cage LOUDLY! I never realized how much she disturbed me until one day I slept on the couch and realized, Wow I got a much better sleep!

Oh I have a question about hay too, is Katee brand hay OK? I have Oxbow pellets but Katee hay. Oxbow hay is so expensive! I do really want to get it though… Sooo tempting…
