Today we noticed our bunny’s front teeth may be overgrown?  This is the best pic I could get.  I can only see the tooth when I pull back a bit on her face.  I emailed our vet and am trying to get her in tomorrow but would love to know what we are dealing with.

        Thanks!

        Justin

If you’re able to see a single tooth that easily outside the mouth with only slight parting the lips, that likely does indicate something is wrong– usually it’s nicely lined up top incisors. Contacting the vet was the right move.

There is no way to diagnose what’s going on based on the photo. Rabbit teeth continuously grow, so one thought is simply the tooth is overgrown because it’s no longer rubbing up against any other teeth since it’s been displaced at this point.

Thanks!  I was able to get a bit of a closer look and it looks like one of the top incisors might be broken.  It looks like it’s over the other top incisor and angled outward.  Hopefully I can get her to the vet ASAP.

I was going to suggest that perhaps the other incisor was damaged. If one is broken off, it can cause the other one become misaligned. As Wick said, it can get to the point where it isn’t connecting with the lower incisors anymore and then there isn’t that wearing action anymore.

                Thanks all for the replies.

Well the broken tooth was sticking straight out this morning and had fallen off before we even made it to the vet.  No infection, and it wasn’t a terribly deep break so the tooth is expected to regrow.   The other teeth all looked OK.  The vet filed down the bottom tooth opposite the broken one. Scheduled to go back in 4 weeks to see how the tooth looks after it grows back in.

Injury is of course not great, but as overgrown incisors go, this sounds like a best case scenario. That your vet filed the bottom teeth is great, since it wont get natural wear until the broken-off teeth grow back. Good job taking her to the vet 🙂
