Mimzy is developing a curious patch of fur along his spine over his lower back. It’s about the size of a silver dollar and seems to be all overcoat (coarse, long strands of fur) and very little if any velvet returning after I had brushed the area last week with the Hairbuster. You can see where the skin is under the wisps of guard hairs. It looked fine when I finished, but it’s like a bunch has fallen out since then and won’t grow back in.
He definitely has a lot of old undercoat built up all over him, and especially around the rear legs and right behind the forelegs, that comes off in chunks each time I brush him, (and he’s probably swallowing some of this too) but I don’t want to take off so much that the new growth can’t keep up. This appears to be the only spot on his whole pelt though, since I brushed last, that seems to be having trouble growing back in. I see places he could be barbering himself around his rear legs, although not to the point of skin, and of course I’m no longer brushing that patch on his back until it starts to fluff back out.
Any thoughts? What should I do? Should I continue to take off the old undercoat anywhere I can still see it or should I wait until his next full body shed? Sorry I can’t upload a pic, PC is still having trouble and since Fiver’s ER vet visit last friday, I can’t afford to take it in.
