I have a 4 year old unneutered male bunny. We are not sure what breed he is, but he is spotted and weighs 5-6 lbs. He has started to poop oval shaped poos but is otherwise healthy. Is there something wrong with him?

Oval shapes are better than small poops, but it can be a sign that there’s a slump in hay consumption or there’s something that’s making him slightly gassy, affecting the poop to be slightly more malleable, hence getting oval shape upon exit.

Wick gets oval poos occasionally, but typically there are regular poops mixed. I would boost hay consumption for two or three days to get things back to normal. If this means giving him more of his favorite kind of hay, or cycling through fresh hay more often, try it.

That is my idea for this. Are there any other changes? Eating habits or anything?

He only eats hay and some fresh fruits and vegetables. I recently cut down on the pellets so he isn’t getting any pellets. Some of his poops are oval and some are regular.

I recently stopped giving him pellets as he was starting to get overweight. Sometimes he poops oval shaped poos and other times its just regular shaped poos. He also just finished molting and I read that oval shaped poos can also be because they are consuming more hair than usual and that it should go back to normal after molting.

I was wondering if this could also be a sign of megacolon.

My buns get diff shaped poops during a molt sometimes, so that could be it for sure. I would wait a bit before assuming it’s something else. If he’s still shedding at all make sure to groom thoroughly every day.

He has just finished molting so I don’t know how long this oval poop is supposed to continue. Some of his poops are normal.

I started giving his pellets again yesterday.

Thanks for the information. The only problem being that none of the brushes I use seem to catch his hair even though he was shedding a lot.I’ve tried a Furniture, Slicker brush, a brushing glove, and a comb like brush but none seem to work. Any suggestions on what brush to try next?

What type of fur does he have? Hard to tell from your prof pic. Is it short and shiny or thick and plushy (like a Rex)? I’ve had quite a varieity of fur types and I find there is no brush that works for them all but I’ve been able to find a brush that works well for everyone. A lot of trial and error, however.

                              He has short, dense fur.

It is thick and long but not like an angora’s. Maybe in between a “regular” rabbit’s and an American fuzzy lop’s.

For my wooly-ish Mini-Lop I find a small metal slicker works best along with a rotating tooth comb. Both of these items I bougth at the pet store in the small dog section. BB sells a brush that I love for my Sterling’s fur and a lot of bunny owners swear by, it’s called the HairBuster.

Thanks. I’ll try to find one.
