We bought some chicken wire from ACE hardware for $16 and set it up in the backyard and let the bits get some outdoor time without a harness or leash on. They were very happy and VERY curious to be outside without the leash/harness bugging them and without us following their every footstep. We plan on buying a second bunch of chicken wire to double the size of the enclosure and adding the “cottontail cottage” so they have something to play in while outdoors! Here’s some pics:

Brambles taking a look around. A side note: he never used to stand up (we actually suspect he is a little retarded as far as rabbit intelligence goes) until we made him stand to get his treats every day. After about 2 weeks of conditioning him to stand I think he caught on and learned that he can see farther when he stands…and now he does it ALL THE TIME! It makes us very happy to see that he learned something new.

Brambles recklessly and immediately jumped on top of the box while Roger very carefully and meticulously investigates it from eveyr angle before coming aboard. Vicky was busy testing the fence to see if she could escape (she’s the notoriously destructive one out of our trio…)

I can just “hear” them now:

Brambles – Hey, what is that over there? Oh wow, look at that! Check that thing out!
Roger – Um, Bram, I don’t know about this. Are you sure it’s safe?
Vicky – This fence can’t keep me down!

                        Ha! Love the pics!!

I’m curious to set something similar up outside as well.  Something they can go in supervised, but easy to take down and inexpensive!!

OK I just have to ask.  Are you supervising them at all times?  I worry about predators if you leave them unattended.  We have had several incidents here with hawks trying to fly off with a rabbit!  Just be super careful.  Very cute pictures.

Very similar to what I had up for Mimzy last year, except my chicken wire is attached to a shed which he bursts into at any sign of trouble. I’d put the pet taxi in the corner of the fencing for him to stand on, and he loved to do that. But I was always nervous that he’d use it to springboard over the edge and bound away. I kept a seriously good eye on him. >.0
He was more of a digger though. I can imagine Vicky is trying to convince the other two that they should help her tunnel to freedom! ^_^

And what do you mean Brambles is retarded?? *smacks Lago upside the head* Geez you don’t say that in front of the poor bun do you? You’ll give him a complex! >.< lolz….j/k

                            We can’t get Pip to STOP doing those ‘bunny-ups’, as we call it. No matter what or who is going by the xpen, she is on her back feet trying to get a good look or sniff. I often see her testing the height of the pen and I can imagine what fun I’m going to have with those two outside this summer. One bun generally doesn’t get too bold in a situation like that, but I can just bet the two of them will be plotting away. 0.o;

The piccies are lovely, btw. You have a handsome set of bunnies, they look tremendously happy together.

Hopefully we wont here anything about a great escape!

                                Thanks for the comments guys.

And yes, knowltons, we supervised them closely during their outdoor adventure and are well aware of the danger predators pose to rabbits.

I only wish it was quieter where we live, the cars on the road always frighten them when they drive by. And if a plane flies overhead they are just shocked. We want to take a field trip outside of the city and just let them play outside in their pen for a whole day where it is peaceful.

It’s funny, we don’t have a LOT of traffic where we are, but it’s certainly increased since we moved here 13 years ago. And of course, the hubby has a huge Blazer with one of those monster motors that just scared the bejeeebus out of me when he would fire it up in the driveway when Mimzy was outside last year. But Mimzy doesn’t seem to mind it…the hubby attributes this to the fact that he was abandoned by the side of the main road and heard the cars all the time. (In fact when he would hear the car pull in, he knew it was ‘treat time’ so he’d come out of whatever hiding he was in and bunny-up at the side of the pen.)
Pip, on the other hand, will startle if you sneeze. So I can’t tell you how annoyed my daughter is with me that I intend to take her for outdoor runs this summer. *sigh* You’d think with how paranoid I am about our youngest kitty getting loose outdoors, that she’d have a little faith in me with the bun. (I find bunnies easier to corral than cats.)
I was so looking forward to today being a good day for a little stroll in the garden, but it’s one of those spontaneous thunderstorm days. >.< Me no likie!
