Well, yesterday was our first session! I did the boys one at a time as you guys suggested. This was the first time that they had been outside of their playroom so they were a little nervous but I enclosed them in the kitchen with me, their litterbox, water, and a blanket. I had some treats ready for them and sat down and let them explore the new area. Neither one was interested in the treats whatsoever, so I wouldn’t say that the actual clicker training was a success but I did read that they may need a couple times just to get used to the specific training area.

Berry did wonderful. He actually climbed over me, nudged me, pushed his way through my legs, it was soooo exciting! Bubba has always been the more shy guy, he didn’t climb all over me but did come and check me out quite a few times but spent most of his time in the litterbox.

Guess what else…….I gave them both about 15-20 minutes of time……..neither one of them pooped or peed anywhere but their litterbox!!!!!

I’m hoping this doesn’t drastically change when they get used to the area. I’m wondering if I just gave them too much room too fast when they first came home.

So, I can’t wait until this afternoons session. Talk to you all later!

They are so cute!!!!! I love them!

Keep the space very small for training and do short sessions, no more than maybe 5 minutes. If they get bored, you’re not going to get anywhere. You can also start introducing them to the “click” sound by clicking when you feed their regular food. If Berry is more receptive, you might want to only do the clicker training with him to start, get him used to it first.

Will they take treats in their cage or playroom? I might start with just clicking and treating in their playroom (doesn’t matter if they’re together) without any trick training. They’ll both associate the clicking with food in a positive environment that they are used to, so that when you take them to a new space they’ll understand what’s going on with the clicker.

I also agree to keep the sessions short. They’ll start to focus on you and then you’ll realize when they loose focus. I’ll even do a few training sessions just 10 or 20 minutes apart – I find that’s enough time for Otto to re-focus.
