Well, this is actually my 5th CD (4th if you don’t count one where I only did backing vocals). I had 3 releases with Minstrosity (www.minstrosity.com) but this is the first for Merry Measure.
It is also my first project where I was in charge start to finish, as our old hammered dulcimer player used to do this. I had to schedule the recording, decide on tracks, get licensing permissions, choose a manufacturer, oversee recording and mixing, design and layout all CD art and graphics, get everything on deadline to the various parties, pay, track and receive them. I also am doing all the order fufillment.
Including recording time at $75/hour (for every hour of recording you do 3 hours of “mixing and fixing”), this CD is coming in a hair under 6k. Based on past performance with Minstrosity, I expect to pay back our costs in about a year before we see profit. The shortest ever break-even we did was 6 months for the instrumental CD. The flute guy borrowed money from his MIL to pay the engineer, and I put the actual manufacture and shipping on my credit card.
