I woke up at about 4:40 this morning and I wasn’t sure why. My animals were all running around the house like crazy. I went to the bathroom and Henri was pacing back and forth in the hall. I couldn’t figure out what was making the animals go crazy so I went back to bed.

My alarm goes off at 6:00 this morning and the first thing I hear is “Many of you may have felt the earthquake we had at 4:37 this morning”. . . . . No wonder the animals were going crazy! Come to think of it, Trinity was going a little nutty last night and kept trying to get out the door. . . maybe she knew something was up?

The earthquake was only a magnitude 5.2 and it was centered in Eastern Illinios but was apparently felt in seven states. . . Did anyone else feel it?

Yes Angoragl we felt it here in WV. Ziggy woke me up digging at his bed room door. How wild that they know stuff like that. God’s creature’s never since to amaze me.

Wow I have heard animals sense earthquakes before they hit but it is still quite incredible!

My hubby told me about it this morning. I’m glad you are ok. Animals are quite amazing. Saddly, we take them for granted many times.

I heard it on the news this morning. Hope you are all ok. Animals certainly do know when things are on the way. In the eighties, we had a small quake in NY state on the coast. I believe it was a 2.something. Just enough to wake me out of a sleep thinking it was a tractor trailer truck driving down our street. So I can just imagine what yours felt like.

                  Hope every one is ok.

Wow that’s bizarre. The past few nights the dog has been sleeping through the night and not needing to go out during the night, but last night at about that time she woke up and told me she needed out. Surely she couldn’t have felt anything way up here could she?

Wow I’m glad you are all OK!!!

Waaay back when I was a newborn, we lived in Boston, and my dog at the time (according to my mom of course!) could sense earthquakes and aftershocks HOURS BEFORE they happened-every time…But he was a super senstive guy…My dog now, probably wouldn’t even notice if there was one happening right now!!

                      LOL

I’ve heard this in class and I’m not sure if it’s true, but apparently the fault line on the west coast (from Cali to BC) experiences slight earthquakes at least every 24 hours, just they are too suttle to be felt usually!!

So far today (from midnight to 9am), California has had 14 Earthquakes that were over 1.0 Magnatude. There have been 666 earthquakes over a 0.5 magniude in the California/Nevada area in the last week. We don’t consider it worth noting until it reaches 3.0 (13 of these in the last 7 days, 7 of which in CA). But you do have to remember that California is a big place so it’s not like NY getting hit with that many.

As I have mentioned elsewhere, Maryann has ‘predicted’ 5 out of 8 of the ‘big shakers’ within 48 hours prior to their happening with a specialized thumping routine she does in her cage. It is said that animals can sense the vibrations of the quakes as they begin to build – before we feel them.

The small one is considered an ‘aftershock’ where the tetonic plates are readjusting after the large release of stress from the main quake.  Although they can be felt, they are rarely the same strength as the main one.  If nothing bad happened last night, yer babies should be safe today.

Yeah the aftershock was a 4.5 compareed to the 5.2 of the original quake. I know that they should be fine, I think I am actually just a little freaked. . . Growing up here I had never felt a quake before.

IT is okey to be freaked. So you know, a 5.0 earthquake is not a ‘just’ thing. The energy from a 5.0 earthquake, if my math is right, is close to 200 tons of TNT exploding. I’d suggest putting anything that could fall from a shelf on the ground for a couple of days. Also, tie any cabinet doors closed so everything doesn’t come spilling out. You really should be fine though – just giving you the over the top protection ideas that so many worried bun parents like to know about.

I wonder if that is why some of my parrots were freaking out in the middle of the night.  I heard a commotion of one of them screaming and flapping- so I got up out of bed and turned the light on in their room- and it immediately stopped and they were completely quiet.  So I went back to bed- heard it again- checked again- that time when I got up I heard my pet parrot, Kirby- echoing the commotion in the part of the house he is in.  I heard it once or twice after that- but did not bother to get up again.

I am such a light sleeper- that noise from the pets immediately wakes me up- especially when it is a panic, distress, alarming, etc type noise.

Doesn’t a quake have to be over 4.0 or so before we even feel it? I guess I just assumed that 5.2 wasn’t really anything. Apparently it is the biggest one we’ve had in over 40 years though so it definately wasn’t that small.

I know we live close enough to the New Madrid fault line that if something set that one off I’d be in trouble. They always say that we are way overdue for a big quake from that fault and when it does happen it will be worse then the ones in California. The last time it went off, the Mississippi ran backwards for a little bit! I’ve always been worried about an earthquake because of that.

A 3 will shake a building. A 2 feels like a really large truck passing by. (this, of course, depending upon where the epicenter is). When we got hit with a 3.4 that was only 3 miles from where I work, it felt like the entire building was picked up a couple of inches and then dropped.

I would say that the 5 you just had relieved a great amount of pressure on the New Madrid fault line so you shouldn’t have to worry about ‘the big one’ in your lifetime. The reason it will be worse than california is that I don’t believe your buildings are built to earthquake specifications. Most buildings out here won’t topple unless it reaches over an 8 and at that level damage would be so catastrophic that, believe it or not, falling buildings won’t be what you are really worrying about anyways.

It can be scary if you’ve never felt it, but we’re used to them here Growing up in Colorado, I’d still prefer quakes over tornadoes, although you have more warning with those, but still.
Glad you’re all ok out there

I slept through it, so I have no idea if Pepper reacted.  I live a block from the elevated train tracks, so I’m kind of used to random rumblings.

And for the 10:15 one I was at work – again on a busy street downtown, so I didn;t notice anything.

A friend of mine in Homewood woke up because a couple of things fell and she was confused because both the cats were in bed with her.
