My bunny, Oscar, doesn’t like to eat hay all that much. In fact, when I feed him hay, he starts drinking massive amounts of water. Then he pees massive amounts and starts sneezing because he has saturated his litterbox  (which i then of course change!!). He prefers pellet food, but when I feed him timothy hay pellets, he gets fat fast. if i cut down on the pellets, he goes back to overconsumption of water.

I have two other rabbits who eat hay only, but because Oscar requires pellet food, he has to live separately from the other two. I really want to have bunny diet solidarity, and would like to get Oscar to eat hay and not drink so much water. Anyone seen this before?

How much water is he drinking? Have you had a vet check him out about the over consumption of water?

Oscar drinks 1/2 a gallon of water in 3-4 days and he is a 4lb dwarf lop. He only overconsumes when he eats hay. His water habits are fine when he is on pellet food.

It sounds as though Oscar should he checked out by a vet.  Extreme water consumption under any circumstances can be an indication of a medical problem.

Excessive food pellets can lead to an overweight bunny, and if they do not get enough fiber (as usual from hay) that can be detrimental to their GI system.  Does he get anything else to eat?  veggies? treats?
