I adopted a male dwarf rex about 3 weeks ago. He is a joy, except I am having problems finding a good for him and easy to clean litter. I have tried a variety of wood chips and paper based composts and mulch. He drags it out of the box leaving a huge mess behind! I saw some special rabbit litter made from organic volcano ash. Its kinda pricey so i wanted to know anyone had used it and options before I invest. Also Felix has SO MANY chew toys, wood, boxes and stuff to chew on scattered around the house but he insists on chewing up my carpet. Is there a deterrent spray or something I can use to help train him to stop? I have had rabbits before but they where outside, inside it a while new challenge!

I don’t think volcano ash would be safe for a bunny. From what I can find, it clumps. Clumping litter is good for cats but can be dangerous for bunnies if they happen to ingest some. It can cause gastrointestinal blockages. Rabbits also have very sensitive airways, and volcano ash seems to be a form of very, very fine (bentonite) clay dust that could cause the bun lung trouble.

I use wood stove pellets as litter, they’re cheap and I don’t think they create much of a mess. They are compressed wood pellets that fall apart when the bun pees on them. They’re sold in hardware stores and intended for use in wood stoves, but it makes great litter.

You could otherwise get a litter box screen for the litter box if your bun insists on dragging material out if it.
