Today on Oprah she’s talking about puppy mills a friend on another site has ask her producers to talk about the bunny problem. Lets watch and see.
thanks for posting this.
i normally don’t watch Oprah, but i was flipping channels yesterday and i saw the preview. i am definitely gonna watch, and my husband gets home about ten minutes before it ends, so he’s gonna think i’m a nut, but i am already expecting to cry, so i should be a blubbering mess when he walks in the door. i was going to post a thread on here, but it slipped my mind. even tho this show is puppy related, as animal lovers (slaves) overpopulation and poor conditions is something we are all concerned and angry about. i wasn’t aware that there was a possibility buns would be mentioned, but that’s good to know.
thanks again!!!
i saw that show advertised… they had some terrifying looking pics. yuck. it’s great that she’s getting the word out about this. i’ll cross my fingers that rabbits get mentioned too!
I definitely want to watch it today!
I also saw this preview and don’t think I can watch it. It looks horrendous. Whenever I see something about animal cruelty I flip through it quickly. It just tears me up too much.
i understand what you mean Knowls… and i know some folks don’t like to see that kind of stuff, but personally, i feel i owe it to them to watch. they’re living thru it, the least i can do is further educate myself on what is really happening. it’s always easier to pretend something isn’t going on, or “outta sight, outta mind”, but… i don’t know. it’s a difficult subject all around. i feel the same way about the animal rescue shows, they are hard to watch, but it makes me more determined to prevent suffering and help as i can.
You’re right Beka. It’s not that I try and pretend it’s not happening. I just get sooooo sad. I’ll never forget a National Geographic show I watched years ago about a baby harp seal who was following some photgraphers crying because its mother had just been killed. They had to leave it and to this day it just kills me to think back to that story.
oh those stories are so painfully sad. surrounding yourself with too much incredibly sad stuff can really break your spirit and keep you in a rut i think. personally, stories like that affect me really strongly so i limit my exposure to small bits to stay informed only. and i do not watch them at all if i’m dealing with some thing big in my personal life. thats my attempt at a healthy balance. lol. doesn’t always work out but i try ![]()

yes, i know, and sorry… i didn’t mean that TOWARDS you like YOU pretend it’s not happening. just in general. we all know you’re a great advocate for the buns. *hugs*
I might watch it i dunno. Its tough to watch, but i agree we owe it them. I really hope she mentions bunnies, and others. Lots of mills out there other than pups.
I normally don’t watch Oprah yesterday I got the email from humane society and I will watch it I have to check the guide to see when it comes on and what channel thats how far outta touch I am with Oprah I watch animal planet animal cops I like the emergency vet the best but my lunch at club house is at that time so I miss it. I saw a bunny on it once. I notice on animal cops they were calling boxer dogs bulldogs. maybe they were mixed. I had boxer once a white one. cue to divorce I couldn’t take her she is in a good place tho with the ex mom in law. so I don’t feel so bad about that. not like I dumped her. I know ex mom in law takes them to the vet at the slightest problem she sees them as a member of the family alright enuf about me.
I’m going to watch it. Remember, “To close your eyes will not ease another’s pain.” [Chinese Proverb] Even if you think you know about the horror’s in puppy mills, you never know what new information you will learn from watching. During the show if you feel disgusted and/or you are crying, well that’s what being human is all about. If someone or something else is in pain, we feel that pain. When we feel that pain for another we wan’t to ease it for them. That makes us take action to stop it.
What did you all think?
I wasn’t ecstatic about it. I thought the puppy mill footage and talking about that was ridiculous, 15 minutes max. The shelter part was very sad, and even though I watch stuff like Animal Cops and Animal Precinct all the time and am desensitized to sad animal things, when they were putting those dogs down I got teared up.
I dunno, I didn’t think it was a great episode…. but, I hope a lot of people go and adopt a dog or kitty.
it was promoted as being a full expose of puppy mills and it really wasn’t. i would have liked to see some discussion with the “farmers” but they were barely there. i’m glad they did talk about shelters, spay/neuter and highlighted a few groups that do good rescue work. i’m guessing if you’re looking more for a show to truly dive deep into the mills, you’d have to watch a Dateline investigative type show.
It’s only 4:10 here but I can’t watch it. Did they talk about bunnies?
No, they didn’t talk about bunnies. The only mention of a bunny was at a rescue group that took in “dogs, cats, and even rabbits” and then a shot of a bunny being held.

Knowls – I know exactly what you mean. The problem for me is I actually get these horrific images in my mind that never go away. I have been volunteering and working with animal rescue and care ever since I can remember. (dogs, cats, rabbits) and I have seen first hand such horrible sickening things (the sights, the animals expression, and/or their cries will forever break my heart). And it stays with me.
I know when I would have to deal with some of it first hand, I would just feel numb so I could do my part to help, but then later, I felt it deeply, usually as I was trying to fall asleep. I’ve seen enough to last me a lifetime. So I have a plan on how to deal with the Oprah episode. I have TIVO, (I have it recorded – haven’t watched yet) but I will be watching for “action” points – what I can do to help, but I will be skipping through the horrific parts the best i can.
abit off topic.. but did anyone hear of the pregnant man on oprah? why bother just trying to sell out by saying.. man instead of transexual or whatever?
anyway i feel the same about the buns, its so heartbreaking it just makes me cry constantly and i feel so bad all the time afterwards
i dnt get oprah here some of the time.. so i will see if that channel is working!
I looked at the ‘pregnant man’ stuff on oprah’s website; I think it’s a bit strange, to be honest…like, afters years of testosterone use – even though it says on the site he stopped using it for 2 years before conceiving – I just don’t know if that would be a normal baby…
lol. when i said up top i was “flipping channels” when i saw the puppy mill promo, i was flipping channels, saw the pregnant man, thought “WTH?!” and watched the end of the episode. then i saw the puppy mill thing. i hope the baby is okay b/c she’s an innocent child in all of this. i thought that too about the testosterone use… i guess we’ll see.
BB – That’s exactly my problem is that the images stay with me and like you I see them before I go to sleep – but then I can’t sleep! I think that’s why I am having such a hard time volunteering at the rescue. All those little faces looking at you that desperately need homes are just too much. I’m telling you that baby harp seal story has stayed in my brain for probably 10 or more years and I can still cry over it. I hate being this way!
I don’t normally watch Oprah- but made it a point to watch the puppy mill episode. I think the producers did do a great job of getting the message across with the limits they had. I think they had to heavily edit some of the footage- puppy mill and euthanasia footage- to KEEP PEOPLE WATCHING. If they had gone further into detail- they only would have lost viewers. As it was they “blurred” the neuter surgery footage- I am assuming for those that do not do well at the sight of blood.
Holy cow- the video tribute and song to her deceased cocker spaniel, Sophie had me in tears before the show really even started!!
So I think they did a great job with getting the message across to the common viewer who might not normally watch a show about this and choose to remain ignorant of conditions. A Dateline hardcore investigative would have done more justice to the issue- but lost A LOT of Oprah’s viewers I think.
I think it is a fine line- and the fact that the messages did get out there- horrid puppy mills conditions, 99% of pet store puppies are from puppy mills, and the staggering numbers of euthanasias in shelters, etc.
I watched the whole thing. I understand wanting the exposure for the puppy mills but what about all the other animal mills? Couldn’t they have taken two seconds to say that dogs aren’t the only animal that has mills?
It seems like that would have been the perfect time for the featured animal rescue to do a plug for all the other animals they take in.
when you put it that way, i get your point Katnip.
Hedi, i know what you mean, it would have been nice, but you have to remember this is going out to mainstream America who mostly only has eyes for dogs. buns i’m not surprised by, but i am surprised they didn’t mention cats a little bit more. cats i think reproduce even more frequently than dogs if allowed, and can have some large litters.
