Thank You in advance!
One thing I forgot to add, of you please participate in the poll, would you mind telling the reason for your choice and if so, what can be improved? That way, I can do my best to make it suitable.
Thank You!
It looks like a good diet to me. The actual veggies offered aren’t as important as giving them some variety and a suitable amount. I like looking for the veggies on sale and grabbing some to supplement my standard lettuce and parsley.
It’s good, I like to try and give different kinds each week but it really depends on what looks good at the time. I would maybe feed less pellets since they get so many vegetables, mine only gets a tablespoon of pellets each morning and a heaping plate of veg at night.
Green peppers, brussel sprouts, chard, endive, escarole, carrot tops, radishes/tops, etc would be nice to add too to mix it up some more
The mixing up the veggies is great. You just need to make sure that your bun will actually eat the veggies you choose…some rabbits are picky. You are getting the right idea though.
Do you think I should take one off the list and give a bit more pellet? Or…..? Am I giving enough or too much? I am planning on ratting weekly, and have planned two weeks to rotate from. Is there any other ways I can improve it?
Thank You all!
the less pellets the better
My buns each get 1/8 cup, well, my 2 girls share that amount. And I’m going to lower that amount even more. More veggies = better!
I have started to decrease the pellets from my current diet, I have yet to transfer to the new one above. I went from one half
cup to a 1/4 cup, and they seem to be doing fine with it.
I have started decreasing the pellets from 1/2 to 1/4, and that seems to be fine with them. Should I start my new diet right away? I need to go shopping for them anyways tomorrow as we are expecting a huge snow storm here in Minnesota with 12-15 inches! Should I start them in their new diet, or should I wait?
You only want to introduce one new veggie at a time to see if it will cause a problem. So if you have never fed any veggies before, start with a lettuce (like romaine, red, or green), and see how they do. How fast you can introduce new veggies depends on your rabbits and any problems they have had in the past. I typically give her just a little bit the first night to see if she will even eat it (so far, so good, she has never rejected anything). The next night I give her double what I gave her the night before. By the third night she gets a full serving and the veggie is now a part of her diet. I continue to look for problems during the rest of the week. Though I am not sure if I am the best person to give advice on veggie introduction. Nova is a garbage disposal that will eat anything you put in front of her and has *knocks on wood* never had any digestive problems.
For veggies she has had before but not recently (as in the last few weeks) I am less afraid to give her a few “new” ones in the same night. Again though, you really need to get a feel for what your bunnies can handle, and just take it slow.
That is a good idea, I’ll try your three day introductory deal.
they have had veggies before, but only celery, carrots, and a coleslaw mix. Not much variety I know, that’s why I am trying to improve their diet. Does that work? ![]()
Update: I have started to feed Kale and Celery along with Parsely and the coleslaw mix. They also got new grass hay free from my grandparents – horse hay from my horse. This summer I am going to complete their new diet. Any suggestions?
Also, it would be nice if members wouldn’t mind sharing their weekly menus. ![]()
Mine get a mixture of veggies, depending on what I have – typically kale, cilantro, parsley, spinach, romaine, red leaf. If I can find it, I give them wheat grass and watercress, but that is hard to get here. Spinach they get occasionally, but since I don’t feed much and don’t really eat it myself it goes to waste a lot. Broccoli is given as a treat, since it doesn’t upset mines tummies, along with pineapple, apples, banana and carrots and craisins. Herbs are impossible to find here beyond cilantro/parsley. I don’t really set their diet to X amount of X weekly, because what I find varies by what is in stock at the store when I go (and with having to drive over 40 miles to get their greens, I can’t really do multiple trips a week).
For pellets I feed about 1/4 cup between my two, if I feed any less, Stickers goes “starving” no matter how much hay/veggies I give her and will do nothing but eat the carpet, floor, walls, furniture, etc until I give her more and then has to be confined and never let out. So fine, she gets her 1/4. lol
I really like it! I always like to think of veggies, grass, and hay of their “natural food” It’s weird. I feel they should get fed what they eat in the wild (Nothing poisonous! of course!) But I love this diet!
