Has anyone else ever experienced this?

I have a 12 year old female rabbit, never neutered due to lack of knowledge on proper rabbit care.

For the past year or so she has experienced blockedges in her nipple duct. Sometimes her nipples inflame and pus, like her body is trying to expunge the blockedges.

For the past couple of months her most troublesome nipple has been growing, hardening, and turning black.

She was taken to a vet a month ago who said the issues are all due to the fact that she was never neutered and has never reproduced. She’s too old to survive the neutering procedure. The vet gave us antibiotics and painkillers which she gets daily, and said to expect the growth to fall off.

Well, it’s falling off, but ony halfway. I don;t really know what to do, how to keep it clean, whether to brandage it up so she cant clean it, or whether her cleaning it and taking care of it is the best way to go.

        Help!

I would call the vet for advise on this. Your poor rabbit must be in pain.

If you have another vet in your area that sees rabbits- I would recommend a second opinion.  What you are describing sounds painful and if it is really a tumor from not being spayed- it has no chance to resolve without further treatment.

I’ve never heard of this, altho I have heard that unspayed females may also be at greater risk for mammary cancer. Like Sarita said, you need to take her back to the vet and see if they can advise you on what to do or surgically remove the growth. We are not vets on this site and cannot speak further as to what you should do without guidance from your vet.

Animals may not be able to express pain like humans do- but they are certainly capable of feeling pain just as humans do. So just imagine that type of tumor or wound on yourself when deciding on the best course of action.

I’m sure the initial vet can help her out right away, even if you don’t have a second vet to consult.
Please keep us posted on what she says to do.

And even if she was never neutered, you’ve obviously taken good care of her so far if she’s 12 years old.
