One litter box or two?

Hi all,

It’s been a while since I posted here. I doubt anyone remembers me, haha.

So, I repatriated and had to leave my bun, Choco, with my ex. I didn’t think he’d be able to tolerate the 14-hour flight, plus the quarantine, not to mention bringing him into a completely new country, let alone house. It was easier on him to leave him with my ex. Sad, but at least I know he’s well cared for.

So, currently, I am rabbit-less. But I’d like to adopt a bunny soon. I am currently building up supplies to be able to house them comfortably. My plan with the new rabbit, ideally, would be to free roam them in my living room and kitchen spaces.

I currently have two litter boxes. I would like to be able to use them both, but I wasn’t completely sure about it. The setup I plan to have would be an open ex-pen as their own private space, and then free run of the rooms. I was wondering, would it be better to use both litter boxes in separate areas? I’d definitely want one in the ex-pen, but would it be a good idea to place the other one elsewhere in the room? Would this encourage good litter habits, or would it be more confusing than anything, and make them think they can go anywhere?

I’m interested to hear from any free roamers, if you’re out there, but any advice is much appreciated. Thanks!

Sorry to hear about Choco but it sounds like you did what was best for him

In regards to litterboxes, I honestly think it’s all trial and error. My rabbits free roam their own room and my bedroom and I have litterboxes only in their room. But my two rooms aren’t huge. If your kitchen and living spaces are quite sizable it might be worth it to put one in whichever room doesn’t house his pen (so if his pen is in the living room, put the 2nd box in the kitchen)

You might be able to cut down to just having the one box or you might need a few (espesh if the rooms are large)

Hi, sorry to hear you had to leave your fur baby It sounds like you left him in good hands though!

Thor is a single rabbit, free roam in 2 rooms. I think Sarah is right that it just comes down to the bun. We initially had 2 litter boxes, but Thor primarily used the one in her area vs. the one in the living room. I trial removed the second box and we’ve had no problems

She’s very good about her litter habits though. A pair of bunnies or a messier bunny may be different.

Thanks for sharing your opinions! I guess I’ll just see what kind of bunny I get and how he or she behaves and go from there.
