All of my baby buns that I posted about before are wonderful little ladies and gentlemen.
This is a post asking for a tutorial on how to help my bun. Will all this medication cause harm? I read on here that some vets give metacam (dog) pt .08 every 12 hrs I questioned the second hospital and the assistant  looked at me like I was crazy.  My story…

I foolishly took in another bunny that is 3. Lived in a hutch outside perfectly healthy until I get her about a month ago.

I noticed she was hunched and her bottom was wet with urine. So off to the e.r vet we go.
now not to many vets in Pittsburgh will look at a bunny and my exotic vet travels to and fro.

Rainbow did an X-ray. Said she had a lot of food in her stomach but very little gas/feces in the digestive tract. She is somewhat knowledgeable about stasis and said she initially would keep’Ever” on fluids overnight. But she wasn’t sure and no beds. I also got an antibiotic, metacam .08 every 24. I started critical care and that’s been a trial. She is also lethargic. Head down. I have next to me all night with a heated throw blanket.
Today I drove to Akron Ohio as referred by the e.r. Vet and what a joke. Animal hospital that says exotic intakes but they don’t do bloodwork or radiographs. No gi mobility medication ( they don’t do that) I spent $700 for some sub’Q  that they wouldn’t prescribe me for home. I re called the first vet and asked if this was correct about not giving my bun something to help her gut move. She felt so bad that she told to stop by and she would give me the two medications to get stuff moving for the upper gut and lower gut. Thank you!!

How is your bun doing now? Have you seen any poop?

If the stomach is full but theres little food or gas in the gi tract, it points to a partial blockage in the intestines. Proper treatment for that is fluids and pain meds. At that stage, gut motility meds are very much  contraindicated. Instead, a spasmolytic drug can be given to help relax the smooth muscle in the intestines. Fluids should preferably be given intravenously, as a drip, the bun (obviously) needs to stay at the vet for that. The next best thing is sub q fluids. The hope is that the fluids help hydrate and soften the partial blockage so it can move away. Fluids by mouth won’t do that.

CC is important, but you should make it very sloppy and only give a few ml per serving so the stomach doesn’t get too full again. You can syringe a few ml of water as well.

Pain relief is very important, this condition is painful. 0.8 ml of dog metacam contains 1.2 mg active substance (meloxicam). A rabbit with a partial obstruction needs a high dose meloxicam, up to 1.5 mg per kilo body weight and day for 5 days. Pepcid (famotidine) can be given to protect the stomach lining from the meloxicam.

It’s good if the bun can move around. It is important to keep her warm. Try to entice her to start eating, f ex with fragrant herbs. Dont give sugary food though, sugar can cause overgrowth of unwanted gut microbes and lead to gas.

It’s very sad that its so difficult to find a rabbit savvy vet.

We’d be very interested in updates. Finger so very crossed for your bun.

She’s even worse. Both eyes are cloudy and I’m begging a vet to take her in. Why cloudy eyes?

She just reached her head up and nibbled down lettuce from my plate. It had Italian dressing on so I got her a few more pieces. I’m waiting for a vet to call back about lactated ringers. Please let her get through 24 hrs again. Small poops and wee’s. Doing all that’s advised here. Got her moving a bit.

what spasmolytic drug is suggested? With metacam is it 24hrs with that dose? Can I use famotidine? Cannot track down Zantac otc around here.

Yes, the Metacam dose is for 24 hours.

I think you are doing all you can at home now and it’s great you have seen some poop and pee.

She passed bam, as I held her. She quietly faded away.  I’ve only been a bunny owner for a year. Unfair and heartbreaking. I’m so angry. So angry.

                    I’m so sorry 🙁

I’m just catching up on this but it sounds like your bun was very very sick.  🙁 I’m so sorry for your loss.

                      I’m so very, very sorry.

A partial blockage is a very serious condition and we dont know why it happens. You did all you possibly could and you were there for her through all of it.

                      It is very unfair.

                      Binky free, sweet little bun.

I’m sorry. It’s terrible and feels very unfair, but it isn’t your fault. It does sound like she was very sick.
