So, I work for my local county government and every day they send out an email called Newslink that keeps everyone up to date on what all the agencies are doing. Today I saw that the animal shelter is holding a special adoption day. Being me I couldn’t NOT visit to see how well it was going.
It was going very well! Tons of people milling around and one family looking at the rabbits! They weren’t ready to commit yet, they wanted to do some research. They wanted to meet two rabbits in particular, just in case they decided they wanted a rabbit.
I was looking at all of the small animals and playing with the cutest guinea pig EVER when I looked into the very last cage (under the pigs) and saw him. A gorgeous black bunny. Named Buster. He was sniffing at the cage so I put my finger there to rub his nose. He liked it so I opened the cage door (bad Kristie!) and reached in to pet him…and he at that up! He didn’t shy away or spook, he tried to get OUT of the cage to crawl into my lap!
I got the guy who had been helping the family get him out of the cage for me. When he handed Buster over to me…Buster crawled up under my chin, snuggled in, and started purring!
I wanted to check the sex because his cage card was missing and at this point I didn’t even know his name. He was very obviously a male (His weinner seemed to have a mind of its own)…and he’s already neutered! I about had a heart attack that this fabulously people friendly NEUTERED bunny was sitting in the very last cage on the bottom row…not getting any attention! He’s a year and a half old….and so, so gorgeous.
are u adopting him?
UH OH!! Go get him!!!
Disclaimer *I’m a bad influence*
i know i felt like saying how if you feel that instant bond its always going to be a good move even if it doesnt seem it at the time, but then i thought hmm that may alter her feelings and i dont want to be the reason she gets a bun then regrets it so i didnt say it – whoops lol
Um…I pick him up at 4:30…lol
oh awesome!!! oh god cant wait to see pics!! is that 3 u have now?
Four. It’s a really good thing I’m not married and I dumped my boyfriend…
Good girl. OH I bet he is sooo happy. Thats kind of what happened with Honey Bun. And how he arrived here. You got a real snuggle bunny. I bet he is happy to have his own home ![]()
4?
I have Tank and Ranger, Thumper (the Petco box bunny with the broken leg) and now Buster….soon to be something else.
My co=workers think I’m insane. I was supposed to go to happy hour with them but I just cancelled because I have to pick up the bunny.
I don’t drink anyway.
oh oh, TARM, you’re hooked! I think the ladies at the North Texas Rabbit Sanctuary gave him a few tips, that’s what Hershey did to me. I was just up buying hay and asked to hold her for a minute…….then came the snuggle……..then the neck tuck………….then the tooth purring………………………then, the worst that could happen to someone with 5 buns at home!!! She licked me!!!!
Go get him! He’s claimed you!
Kathy (sucker)
Oh, congrats!!! He’s gonna be so happy to have a new home!!!! Can’t wait to see pix!!!
WOOT WOOT!!! Awesome!! I’m sooo excited for you!!
Yes, we will NEED pictures LOL ![]()
I was going to post the link to his profile but it’s already down. The shelter uses Pet Harbor and it’s listings are in real time.
I bet he might be a good match for your little girl bunny too – she will probably benefit alot from having a partner.
Can’t wait to see pictures. I love black bunnies!
oh sorry i didnt realise you got a third? i usually only get time to check the lounge so i sometimes miss things lol! the 4 of you are going to make such a good little family! im so pleased for you CONGRATULATIONS!!
Yeah, that was my thought when I saw him…that I could add to Tank and Ranger’s cage…and have kind of a stacked condo deal so I could bring Thumper downstairs with everyone else.
Buns do pick their owners. I have watched it first hand happen. Do realize that some shelter buns are much more ‘snuggly’ because they are starved for attention so he may not be AS snuggly as he was in a couple of months – not that that really matters to us.
Just be careful about the ‘impulse adoptions’ as I have seen more than one person get in over their heads and then they wind up being the issue instead of the solution. BTW, this is NOT a comment on your bunny parenting skills, just a general thing. I almost got evicted when I got my second bun and that would have been bad for all of us.
I know what you mean markusdark. It seems like I know my limits and I adopt multiple animals within days or months of each other…but once my “family” is complete I’m content. When I lived with my ex we had four dogs. Now we have two. We had four ferrets, one died and now we have three…two are mine and one is a foster. I had three rats but one died, now I have two. And now… I have four bunnies.
This bunny was an owner surrender. They didn’t feed him hay or greens. They left all of his carefresh and kaytee timothy complete pellets…along with some bag of crap that I threw straight in the trash. He didn’t have a litter box and was not let out of his cage.
So, here’s the only decent picture I’ve been able to take so far.

I’m trying to come up with a good name. He’s very inquisitive and very bold. He was sniffing noses with my Pit Bull! No pictures of that, I wanted my hands to be free in case either of them freaked out and I needed to remove Jezebel quickly.
I know this sounds wierd, but when I look at him, the name “Spot” came to mind. I have no idea why…
Spot? ![]()
I love the name Spot for him! (Of course… I did name a black and white border collie “Pumpkin”… I was 5 yrs old at the time but I guess I never grew out of liking weird names for pets…)
lolz…Well no offense intended, but when I see black bunnies, I think of the Black Rabbit of Inle from Watership Down. Or perhaps Blackavare. ^_^
I LOVE black furred animals. They are so cool! I have had more than my share of black cats over the years, my mum was superstitious and deathly afraid of them so I didn’t get to keep any until she passed away. She was the kind of person who throws salt over her left shoulder and crosses the street to avoid ladders and crosses herself at broken mirrors.
But I think Buster is a good name for him. He ‘busted’ his way into your heart, eh, TARM? ^_^
I haven’t seen Watership Down since I was little…but wasn’t Blackavare BAD???
I was toying with calling him “Digger” because he’s been digging in the cage. But now I’m thinking of “Rex”….to stick with my Stephanie Plum theme.
Blackavare was the bun that Bigwig and Hazel rescued along with Hyzenthlay from Woundwort’s evil clan of bunnies. He’d been trying to escape and Woundwort had his owsla beat him up daily to keep him subservient.
I wasn’t suggesting those as names, just what I was thinking when I saw Buster’s piccy.
Um, forgive my ignorance but, who’s Stephanie Plum?
I remember being really disturbed by the Watership Down cartoon movie. I tried multiple times to watch it but the snare scene and the fight at the end bothered me for years.
We did really like that bird. Even now my dad will say “you stupid bunny! Go got no brains!” Whenever one of us does something dumb.
Stephanie Plum is the star of a series of books by Janet Evanovich. Tank and Ranger are both characters. I would have named this bunny after someone else but I don’t really like Bob, Joe Morelli, or Vinnie.
Like I said, when I saw him, I just thought Spot. Not sure why but I could come up with reasons:
He’s like a big, black spot
nothing is more bold than a period at the end of a sentence, as well as being under a question mark
It’s kinda neat to call a single colored animal “Spot” because they don’t have one. Sort of like calling a big man Tiny.
Following that theme, you could call him Rainbow as in the rainbow bridge and the black rabbit. Not being morbid as I see a guardian and guide for our buns that passed a very important image/being. Or maybe it’s just me…
Oooh Congrats! He looks lovely! Is he a rex? A good adoption in the end being that he’s over 1 year and already fixed. Sounds responsible to me
“Spot” because he took the last remaining spot available in your home?? HAha.
I actually like the name Buster because my family once had a pup named Buster. A total rebel. He used to hang onto the exhaust pipe of our 4 wheeled motorbike with his teeth and not let go. There were teeth marks left on it! Weird! I’ve tagged “Buster” for possible future bun name. I’m gathering quite a few names but not the buns as yet….
Look forward to name you come up with. If you bond him with Thumper, perhaps something that goes well with her name.
How bout Jimm or Bob…I like both. LOL I am not the best at naming though!
oh wow he is soo lovely!
well, here is Texas, JimBob is a popular name…lol
Oh wow!!! He’s beautiful!! He looks like a bunny I pet sat once….
He’s beautiful! I’m sorry he’s a pee-er!
I was also disturbed by Watership Down when I first viewed it with my kids, they were much younger at the time. The snare scene was so horrific, my daughter has refused to watch it with me now that she’s 16.
But when it comes to classic stories, it really is a beautiful tale. You just have to view it with the understanding that this is nature, and it works this way for a reason.
I think the part of it that got me, was when the little rabbit is whisked off by the hawk in from of Fiver. Somehow that part is just so sad to me.
The dogs at the end, well….it’s hard to feel sorry for Woundwort, but you shed a tear for his minions. ;_;
Funny…Pip almost ended up with the name BigWig. That’s what I called her when I thought she was a him at the pet store. When my daughter brought her home one winter evening by surprise, I learned the only way my hubby would let her get Pip was if it was HER bunny.
So she became Pip, as the movie Enchanted was big at the time. ^_^
However, now Pip lives with Mimzy and me in my room…she’s still my daughter’s bun, but I do all the work. ~_~
BTW, LOVE the new name for your bun (reads other thread).
