Omg im sooo worried about Opal
Hes just not himself hes drinking but not eating! and he hasnt eaten in the past 4 hours !!
Hes Kinda walking funny too hes walking like he is streching and then putting his bum down as low as possible
Could he have sprained or strained a muscle or should i be worried ??
He is also funny about me picking him up and he normally loves to be picked up :S
Whats wrong ????
How late is your vet open? Try calling and describing his symptoms, and if they’re there, make an appointment to bring him in tomorrow morning.
Your vet may have an emergency line to call during closed office hours. I’d suggest calling that number and telling them what’s wrong. Then see what they advise you do tonight.
Has he pooped at all? If he has, check it to see if it’s normal, runny or strings of pearls. If the latter, he’s ingested fur. If not, see if he poops in the next hour if you can’t get anyone on the phone, then watch if he eats right after that. (Offer him a treat and see if he takes it.) Is he limping? Try not to bother his leg, but you could gently massage his tummy for a bit to see if it gets moving at all. Do you hear sounds?
You might want to get info. on where a local 24 hour vet is located while you watch him. I wouldn’t panic yet, but be ready to roll if it doesn’t improve by morning. Someone else here may be able to help more. Better safe than sorry.
Oh no! Call the vet! I hope he’s OK!
Errm where i live its 2:10am and my vet isnt open at all overnight (i had this problem when my hamster died )
Hes been out around the house so i cant tell if hes pooped :S
Plus my mum says its nothing to worry about so ive got to wait it out
Omg im sooo worried i just dont know what i can do
Because of the way my mums being she always thinks im over reacting and i cant seem to make her understand how serious this could be she just tells me its nothing to worry about but its really not normal for opal to refuse his favorite treats !
Anybody else know anything about what it could be ??? It would be a big help if anyone who has had simmalar problams
So you’ll probably get an answer from your vet within 6 or 7 hours by phone. Can you just let him rest comfortably in his cage with a litter box and water in there? Put in hay too so he can eat it to help his digestion if he wants to eat again soon. If he’s confined he may rest and pass a problem eventually. You’ll be able to see his behavior better in a confined space. Do call the vet as soon as you can. Try to rest yourself tonight.
Maybe he has gas. Can you hear his stomach gurlging?
You’re feeling more panic because of what happened to your hamster. It’s scary when they are not well. Just keep an eye on him and ask your Mum to help you take him to the vet after you’ve called if they want him in right away. Digestive problems need to be seen soon, ie. the same day. It doesn’t sound life threatening if you take action first thing in the morning.
On several occasions Spockie wouldn’t get up in the morning to eat, just lie there in his litter box or on the cage floor and look listless. Turns out he had some sort of indigestion which usually turned out to be mushy poops not long after and as soon as he passed it he was hungry and bouncy. We’ve all been there.
Thanks for all the answers but i got him to eat a treat and hes got access to hay but im still worried it could be somthing to do with his back or legs ive already had soo many trips to the vets with him and ive only have him 2 months because he is very clumsy. Hes already broken a claw on his bid for freedom and acted strangley and then been fine after the trip to the vets. He does have funny turns but the fact he was sort of falling around on the floor while trying to hop is the scariest thing :S
I love this bunny and desperatly dont want to lose him but he is always injuring himself and my mum just treats him like any old mouse or hamster but hes alot more specail than that ! x
He’s definitely special. I think you’re special to your Mum and she’s probably trying to calm you down so you can give him good care but not get too upset. Have you noticed any swelling? If he’s been clumsy, it’s possible you could bunny proof his cage and play area for things that are too high for him to climb on, or things that trip him, etc. If his head is tilting or wobbly, he may have an illness called head tilt, but only a vet would be able to diagnose that. I’m glad to hear he ate a treat.
Is this your first bunny? Just making sure you know what a binky and a flop look like. A binky is when they jump and twist and bounce sideways – really goofy looking moves. A flop is when they just fall over, splat, and it’s so scary the first time. They’re so relaxed they just drop on their side to rest. See how he behaves by 9 AM, the give the vet a call.
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
If shes still not eating try hand feeding her hay. sounds to me like maybe she’s hurt, especially since she won’t let you pick her up. get to the vet soon! Until then just give her as much TLC as you can and keep a good eye on her
sorry those were supposed to be vibes but opal’s name got left out!
Try again! <<<<<>>>>>
i emailed the forum leaders, hopefully they can give you more direction!
THANK YOU ALLENJ for alerting us. Greatly appreciate it.
At first it sounded like he was having a painful bout of gas, (which can get serious enough for immediate vet care too), but the falling down thing – is he still doing this? How is he moving about now?
If he is still having difficulty at all, he needs to be seen by a vet. I know it’s expensive, but not seeking treatment is not much of an option. He should get the care he needs. Hopefully your mother will understand this.
I’m so sorry you are having to deal with this. I know you love him! Hugs to you and keep us updated.
OH I’m so sorry to hear this!! It’s a definite trip to the vet thing. Maybe let your mom read this thread and watch him a bit-then maybe she’ll understand? Please keep us posted
Thanks for the heads up Allenj1. It sounds like tonight all you can do is try to get him to eat a little and offer him some comfort if he does not seem too scared of you. Try to feel his ears and if they feel cool to the touch, offer him a safe heat source like a pile of blankets or a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel to keep him warm.
{{{Opal}}}
keep us posted! i hope everything is ok!
How is he now? What did the vet say?
Aside: I thought of alerting a FL, but didn’t see anyone on the list of members logged in. How do you guys like to be alerted, and how do we know who’s on duty, especially during the night?
Any update? Have you talked to the vet yet? I sure hope he’s okay.
Rabbitpam, just click on our names then click ‘click to send email’ and then you can email us We’re not on duty perse, but if we get emails that makes us jump to the board and know where to go first!
Your welcome for the alert. The situation just made me think back to how freaked I was when Boston first got sick.
Hope Opal is doing well. Keep us updated!
Thanks everyone .. he seems to be okay now his leg is a little sore still but he has been hopping around in the run in the garden i kept and eye on him until about 3am and this morning he is alot better. Hes still pretty clingy like when i little kid gets hurt! But im keeping a close eye on him.
My vet thinks it could be a strained muscle from where he loves water he jumps in and out he could have knocked somthing ive also been told that im feeding him the right amount but to give him alot less because he stuffs his face with dinner and then eats loads of hay! so around meal times hes having a tiny amount of pellots and he always has access to hay and gets carrots and cabbage everyday.
Thanks everyone
Oh and he pooped .. alot all over my bed this moring .. maybe letting him sleep up there wasnt such a good idea!
And yes he is my first bunny and omg he scared me the first time he did a bunny flop and .. he doesnt hop much .. he pings doing massive binkies around the room
Whew, I am glad he is recovering nicely. It can be very frightening when our bunnies are feeling poorly. When you get a chance, please look at the information under the ‘bunny Info’ tab at the top of the page, and look in the diet section. Carrots are very fattening for bunnies (like us eating candy for dinner) and some bunnies can get really sick from cabbage. There are lists of good veggie choices in the diet section, things like dark green lettuces and herbs.
I’m glad he’s better too. I agree with Osprey – carrots and cabbage probably aren’t the best choice for vegetables for him.
Okay … maybe this is a thing in england but ive been told carrots and cabbages are the best but ill have a look !
I also give him spinach, apple, banana and ive been told to never give bunnies lettuce as it gives them bad tummies !
Lettuce is fine. Romaine and green leaf and mixed spring lettuces are good. But not iceberg.
You just want to start giving very small amounts one at a time.
Banana and apple are treat foods and should be given in very small quantities (a small sliver a day) like carrots.
Also try cilantro (coriander) and parsley (curly or flatleaf).
Okay thanks
And Basil! Boston goes nuts for basil!!!
So glad she is doing good!!!!
Haha HE !! lol although i supose thats my fault i wanted a girl bunny but he just stood out from the crowd all in the corner .. wouldnt swap him for the world now !! and yep im gonna try basil
So glad he’s feeling better. Water and binkies can be a risky combo for little legs slipping I suppose. Maybe, also like kids, he’ll get bruises and bumps and just keep on playing until he grows out of it.
I knew that he was due for a lot of poops if he was ultimately OK digestion-wise. You will be more familiar over time about what is normal for him and what is odd. A few pictures would be nice for us to see too…
i’m glad he’s feeling better!!! if you need more info on diet, there is a section in the bunny info page.
So glad he’s feeling better!!!
Tee heee….. What a cutie! ^_^ I had to use this caption that had been on a picture at icanhascheezburger.com….
I love the configuration on that pen! What kind is it, if you don’t mind me asking?
Aw…. he’s such a cutie! He looks so sweet.
hes cute happy he is okay

i do think it is an england thing because i find its a common opinion amongst people i know that lettuce is bad for rabbits, lots of people i know feed carrots reguarly, not just as a treat & its often quite hard to find veg that i recognise the names off because i dont think alot of its commonly on sale in england – i tend to feed alot of green pepper because millie loves it.
i also find that its a common opinion here that pellets should be the main diet for rabbits & alot of people i know fill their rabbits bowls right up and think that they will only eat whats the right amount for them.

^^ just incase u wondered what i was talking about in the comment above
Do these people have fat bunnies? Also, bunnies that live and/or spend most of their time out doors need more calories than house rabbits, do these bunnies live outdoors?
In The States, the thinking among most people is very similar to what you have described. No hay, veggies cause loose stools, pellets should be free fed. Most people also do not take rabbits to the vet, so they are never told how to properly care for them. I think this is why people think rabbits only live a few years, because they are fed poorly and die from GI problems rather than from old age.
osprey – from my experience, the people i know that locally with bunnies take them reguarly to the same vet as me for vaccinations & take them for check ups etc if they think anythings wrong – the advice ive got about feeding from that vet is to feed a small amount of pellets, unlimited hay theyve never realli mentioned vegtables. Most people around here keep their rabbits outside but rabbits do spend most daytime time inside. One of the rabbits i know is really quite big but the other one is average size and they both feed their rabbits unlimited pellets.
the whole house rabbit phenomenom is really quite new. even tho, the HRS is celebrating the 20th anniversary this year, it’s taken a long time for the proper care and diet to really catch on, and even still, it’s by no means the norm just yet. i know there are cultural differences betw/ here and the rest of the world, but that’s what’s so great about the internet, all the different people can come together and learn from each other.
yes – im glad i found this website
Hehe the pics great !! Lmao
And the cage is savic i think i got it from pets at home =D
Thanks Monty! Savic? Pets at Home, got it.
I hope it’s not only a British company, I’d sure love to find something like that here.
I just remembered, reading this thread, my first bunny, Mimzy, took a big spill out of his hutch when I first got him that had me VERY worried he’d hurt himself badly, but somehow he survived it. Now I wouldn’t want a repeat of the episode, but I was so glad that he was young enough that he must’ve just bounced right up from the floor with little to no damage if any.
He’d leaped over the edge of his pen as I was cleaning it from the other side and went about four feet down to the wood floor. He hit with this huge thump and I thought for sure he’d have to have broken something. (At the time I thought he was a girl and was worried about the possibility of a litter being lost too, so it was pretty scary.)
Maybe you could encourage your bun to enjoy binky-ing on other surfaces, like carpets and cushy floor mats and so on? Otherwise I think he’s going to need a pair of water skis soon! 0_o
He sure is a cute bun though!
Hehe water skis ! they might just work and im not sure about pets at home other than in the UK they have a website tho ..
http://www.petsathome.co.uk i think and about the binkys he does then EVERYWHERE lol no way to stop this lil bun x
I love the dutch.
Hahahahaa! Markus you slay me! ^_^
