Oliver has passed

I don’t know if I am more heartbroken or angry. I don’t know if I can do bunnies anymore after this. 

Oliver was the sweetest rabbit on the planet by far. But it all got ripped out from under me this morning because of an angry neighbor. 

My rabbit room is right next to a neighbor who quite frankly hates everyone and everything. We had a bit of a spat yesterday and he threatened me and my animals. 

I didn’t think anything of it since he has done this many many times before. 

I let Ollie out to play in the bunny room and everything was fine he was doing some semi-binkies (kind of hard with huge ears). I refreshed their hay baskets and that was that. 

An hour or so later I see my neighbor outside but didn’t feel like being pestered so I stayed inside. I went into the bunny room to shut the blinds and that is when I see my neighbor standing next to his fence with a shotgun. But he turned away so I was still worried but not afraid he was going to shoot me or anything. 

Then just as I was about to pour some more water into the water bowl he fires his gun. Oliver screamed so loud and started flailing. Before I could even get across the room to him he had died. The vet said that he likely suffered a massive heart attack. 

I have filed a police report and it is being “investigated”. But that won’t bring my Ollie back.

OMG, Sonn….This absolutely breaks my heart to read this. I’m so sorry. Poor Oliver. I’m just broken reading this. I can’t even imagine how you are feeling. Big Big (((Hugs))) I’m super angry at your neighbor. What a horrible situation….

This guy is a maniac and he has threatened you and your furbabies, and shown up with a gun. No argument justifes that. He needs to be in custody and until he is, you are not safe. Will you, at the very least, be able to get restraining order?

I’m not done with bunnies. That was just a moment of defeat. I will be fostering a bunny soon as he has been waiting for the foster kittens I had to find homes for me to foster him. I would hold off but I made the commitment months ago and don’t want to just leave him there.

The guy is in custody and I am in the process of getting a restraining order. Luckily there were witnesses that saw him next to my window.

So glad they got him and you’re safe. I’m glad you’re not giving up on bunnies. I’ve heard that defeat in your words before (understandable with all you’ve been through), but you of all people are truly needed by the bunnies in this world.

Talk to a lawyer as there may be more that you can do to him. Although a lawsuit wouldn’t bring Oliver back, any monies you got you could donate to rabbit shelters. People like this need to know that such things have consequences.

OMG, my heart sank when I saw this thread. I am so so sorry Sonn. What this man did is inexcusable. I hope they lock him up! And yes, sue the pants off of him! I know that sounds terrible, but this guy needs to pay for what he has done one way or another.

This is just too horrible, Sonn. Your neighbour must be a maniac to threaten you like that and to fire a shotgun in a residential area. I hope he’ll be dealt with by the authorities. It doesn’t seem safe to have a person like that on the loose. I hope you can sue him.

Now about that @$$ neighbor who did something like this, I don’t even have the words to describe the emotions I am feeling towards that low life who is threatening you, a precious BB member and your beautiful furbabies. And to cause the death of poor Oliver too. I am SO sorry Sonn. I don’t even know what I can say, in fact I can’t say anything, that will make you feel better at all. I am truly saddened by this news. It was so unfair to have another furbaby taken away from you far too soon. 

Is your neighbor a homeowner or is he renting? If he’s renting I would *personally* try and get in contact with the landlord and tell them about their tennent’s bad behavior, and how he needs to be removed.

Oh Sonn, I wish that I could help to take some of your pain away, and make you feel better, but I know that I cannot.

So sorry to hear about your loss! Some people are just naturally mean and want nothing better to do than mess up other peoples’ enjoyment . I hope everything works out for you and that neighbor gets taken away!

As a side note you can also look at your city/county ordinances. I know many US ordinances prohibit the firing of guns in residential areas. May help the restraining order argument! I do wish you the best of luck, and again so sorry for your loss. Blinky Free Oliver!

My neighbor rents from the same person that I do. I have already contacted her and she is going to see if she can legally make him move. He has been a nuisance apparently since before I even moved in.

It is not illegal to shoot firearms in my area as long as you are not firing within the city limits or over someone’s house (which is why I think he turned away before firing). You can stand on your porch and shoot any gun you want as long as there are no houses or businesses where you are shooting and you can account for each bullet you fire. But since he threatened me and people witnessed him threaten me with a loaded gun on more than one occasion the lawyer has told me that he would pursue assault charges.

omg, this is a terrible thing! Words cannot describe how I feel right now. I’m really angry right now, not just at the needless death he has caused but also the lack of responsibility he has shown. I’m not against people owning firearms, but using it as a threat to me is grossly irresponsible.

My neighbor has been charged with a few things. I will update when I know more. But my landlord has assured me that he will no longer be living beside of me or in any of her houses any longer.

Sonn, I am apologizing to everyone on Rainbow Bridge for not seeing so many posts this month. This is truly frightening. I’m glad legal action is happening quickly, but I am so concerned for your safety. I know how difficult it is to have to move, but consider moving away yourself if it’s at all possible. Right now that crazy man knows where you are, and his life just got a lot worse. I hope he is smart enough to stay away now, but he doesn’t strike me as smart in any way.

It is heartbreaking to read about Ollie. He and you have been constants in our members here, and it is a shock to know he is gone.

I think everything has moved quickly due to the number of people who witnessed him continually threatening me and several other neighbors. Plus the shells left under my window.

My former neighbor was put on probation and heavily fined. The restraining order has been in place since yesterday.

I am glad that this guy is getting what he deserves! Be strong and try not to hold a chip on your shoulder. It is a very sad situation, but you need time to grieve.
