Okay, I know it’s only been 2 days, but…

I watched, sadly, as Mimzy had another sneezing attack last night (albeit-not as severe as they have been) and blew more snot bubbles out of his nose. This is also decreasing, ever so slightly, but I guess I am just used to seeing what antibiotics do in human beings and other animals. Do rabbits really take that much longer to stop showing symptoms of illness?

Also, upon checking the first bill I had for him for this episode, I realize he’s been sick since roughly about January 26. I suppose if it’s taken him this long to get decent treatment, it’s going to take awhile for him to be completely recovered, right?

At least his little nose doesn’t look as wet underneath it as it has. And he’s being pretty good about taking his doses twice a day. I had hoped to have him out for a bit this morning, but while I was holding him I suddenly heard my dog trip over something in the back room and had to rush Mimzy back into his pen. I got thumped for that.

Is there anything else I can be doing for Mimzy during his convalescence? I mean, are there any other vitamins I can give him or herbals that might hurry things along?

I think you’re right about the length adding to the severity of his illness, and therefore not being as fast to clear up.

I would discourage you from adding anything, even a seemingly benign vitamin, to his system while the anti-bio takes effect. A steady diet without change of good hay, pellets, greens and plenty of water will keep him stable and his little system able to concentrate on healing. Poor little guy.

Actually that was Pip this morning, I made the mistake of leaving the paper towels on top of the pen where she could reach them and I come back to find she’s pulled two of them down into the pen and is tearing them into shreds. 0_o Yum.

Mimzy’s nose still looks a bit wet today, last night it looked like he’d given up trying to clean it, so I wiped it for him. He actually put up with it! I had him out on my bed (ooo, was Fiver mad!) for about two hours. He got alarmingly comfortable and I was afraid I would have to sleep with him right there…lol! (Can’t do that, the cats would be a problem, but if it were safe for him to do so, I would’ve let him.) So far today I haven’t heard the rapid fire sneezing. He is active and eating and drinking, so I think we’re doing pretty good, considering. I am wondering if the probiotic may be delaying the curative effect of the antibiotic.

Which, btw, I was surprised to find that half the bottle of Baytril is gone already! 0_o I mean, this stuff is supposed to last ten days, it’s only been 3 1/2!

I take Pip and Fiver in on the 5th. If it looks like Mimzy is going to draw short on the meds, I’ll ask for some more when I go in. The syringe they gave me measures about 3 ml total, but part of the measurement for 1 ml gets stuck in the tip.

I fostered two bunnies that had very bad colds (not sure exactly what the illness was but they were having sneezing fits and were very congested). They were on Baytril probably at least 5 days before the symptoms really started decreasing. The first few days that they were on the Baytril they were still sneezing so badly that I would have to get up in the middle of the night and help them blow their noses. I think I already mentioned this to you, but for them I would run very hot water on a wash cloth, and then wring it out, and then hold the wash cloth *near* the bunnies nose (not touching it) – to help them get some steam up their sinuses to try to help break up the congestion.

5 days? *gulp* Okay, I’ll try to be patient. I am still wondering how he got branhamella in the first place. (However, I DO notice my two indoor cats are sneezing a bit more than I like to see.)

I’ve tried unsuccessfully to help Mimz blow his nose, because he gets so touchy when a tissue approaches. But I do notice that we are getting on better with the dosing, he is not refusing it as much as before. And he loves the special ‘snuggle time’ we have afterward. I think, I hope, he knows I’m trying to help him.

With Rucy it’s always taken at LEAST a few days to see some results and most times longer (she’s a chronic case though) Most of the time though the vet puts her on 2 weeks minimum. I know that just like in humans, that it’s very important to complete the med cycle even if they look better. Also, if you don’t see him all better at the 10 day mark, let your vet know as she may need to extend the meds, or find another one that may fight this better. (even though she knows what type it is, there are several antibiotics that can fight the same infection and I’m not sure why some may work better for one bunny over another.

I had the same feeling about running out of meds with Spockie. It went down the bottle so fast at first, but then it seemed to just keep coming day after day from the bottom before it ran out. It happened every time, and was always the right number of days for the dosage. Only once when I spilled it did I need more sooner. Good that you’re going in just in case, especially if BB is right and she wants to try a different type.
