Is it ok to limit Pellets early? Fern is only 6 monts old now but I wanted to know the youngest I can limit pellets. The reason I want to limit her pellets is becuase she does not eat that much hay, she only eats her pellets. I was getting worried so I did not give her pellets for a day. WOWEE she ate A TON of hay and I was really happy. Before, she ate little to no hay. I was just wondering if I could limit pellets early… I just feel so much better when she is eating a lot of hay.

I’m not positive, but I think its ok. We started limiting Boston’s pellets when she was only like 6 months old. I think especially if it helps her to eat more hay, it should be fine….but I’m sure someone else knows more than I….*someone? anyone?*

how many pellets does she eat in a day? i think you can start to reduce the number she gets (give her a tablespoon less for a week, then another tablespoon less the next week…)

what type of pellets is she getting? if they are alfalfa, then she will need to start being phased out of those over the next couple months onto timothy. same with the hay if it is alfalfa. you want her to be completley switched over by 1 year at the latest, so this gives you four months to get her onto a proper adult diet.

what types of green veggies is she getting? and in what amounts? you didn’t mention…

I would measure out her pellets instead of just dumping unlimited pellets in her bowl.

I think its at 7 months, or at least for Hammer thats the plan. I would think a month early wouldnt do any harm : ]

Plus the more hay the better

She eats about one third a cup of Pellets a day, I know it is not that much but I was going to limit to 1/8 of a cup, slowly of course.

She eats Romane lettuce once a day, I don’t know if she eats 1 cup or 2 cups probably somewhere in between.

She gets alfalfa pellets with timothy hay.

If I do limit her pellets early I will do it after her spay, I don’t want her to have a limited diet when she will be very finicky and needs food the most.

                  Thanks!

I’d start switching to timothy pellets at this point first actually…At around this age, it’s important to move from alfalafa to timothy

i think the 1/3rd cup is fine for now. some people give their buns unlimited pellets and it ends up being a cup a day or more. that’s way too much. i agree with K&K that you could start switching to the timothy pellets. you need to do it slowly. if you need guidance on how, feel free to ask… after her spay and closer to a year (9 months maybe) you can start to reduce further eventually going down to 1/8th cup… as you reduce the pellets, you will want to increase her veggies to betw/ 2-4 cups per day (so probably about double what she gets now…) veggies are important for fiber (just like the hay) and for hydrating her digestive system.

It’s a good thing she likes veggies. And I will get her some timothy pellets and start transitioning now! My mom will be happy because the place that sells the oxbow timothy pellets is closer than the place that sells the alfalfa ones!

Be sure to follow the Oxbow guidelines in switching over (the directions are on the bag) – it’s a good weaning method.
