Earlier today I was excited and posted that Hazel and Sofia were recovering well after their spay yesterday. Well, after giving them their evening meds, metacam and an antibiotic, Hazel is just laying around and seems a little uncomfortable. She refused cilantro but she was happily munching on it earlier today. Maybe she is just resting and I’m being paranoid? I hope so. I know I tend to worry a lot. If I hold her and try to give her critical care, she’s her old stubborn self and puts up a fight. I don’t want her to struggle too much since I know she’s still sore. Any thoughts? I barely slept last night so I need to sleep but I’m worried.

Make sure she’s kept warm. They can get hypothermic post surgery and Metacam also has a temperature-lowering effect. It is worrisome that she won’t eat cilantro. That she fights CC is a good sign though, it means she has strength and willpower. But she will need to eat something pretty soon. I’d contact the vet again if this inappetence keeps up. Is there nothing she will eat voluntarily? Have you seen any droppings since they came home?

It is normal for a newly spayed bun to be rather out of it. That makes it harder to tell if something isn’t right. Complete lack of appetite is a warning sign though.

That’s the thing…earlier in the day, she was eating cilantro and hay..a good amount. She has pooped. They both have. She’s actually moving around a little now and I just saw her hop into the litter box. I’m letting her rest and hopefully I won’t have to make a trip to the vet in the morning.

Hazel is doing better. I’m sure now that I just worry too much. But it’s hard not to when you love them so much! She’s eating hay, cilantro, and nibbled a few pellets. She’s also pooping and peeing quite normally now. I gave her a half dose of metacam this morning because I think it was affecting her appetite. Luckily she doesn’t seem to be in pain at all ?
Sofia has been licking at her incision, so I’m trying to figure out how to stop that. Has anyone tried bitter apple spray? And does it work?

I’m glad to hear she’s doing better ? I don’t know if bitter apple spray is ok to use on skin. Sometimes it’s about inadequate pain relief when a bun takes an undue interest in their wound. What dose of Metacam is she on? She might need more, the therapeutic window for a Metacam for buns is quite wide, it ranges from 0.1 ml to 1.5 ml per kilo body weight and day.

In some cases the bun needs to wear a cone. You can make a cone-like collar from a small paper plate.

She doesn’t seem to be uncomfortable, but I’m not her, so I can’t say for sure. Lol she’s getting 0.27 ml of metacam every 12 hours. And she weighs 1.32 kg. Could it be that she needs more? I was thinking about buying a soft e-collar for her. I’m definitely keeping a close eye on both and I even got out my air mattress so I can sleep downstairs w them. I do miss my bed but I am a nervous bunny mom.

Hi! I know, I am a nervous wreck when my babies are sick.
It all depends on the concentration of the metacam as it can come in a couple of concentrations. Some bunnies do need more pain meds than others, just as long as they aren’t on it for too long. I would do the e-collar if you aren’t able to distract her as she starts to lick. You might want to offer her some veggies as soon as she starts licking so she won’t want to do it, and her incision is probably itchy. I know there is a cream from the vet you can put on it to heal it very fast so less licking. You can do the e-collar but take it off if she shows signs of stress as it could cause her to go into stasis.

She’s still getting metacam but I have a hard time getting her to take her antibiotic. I’ve been smearing it on her paw and she licks it off. It’s the only thing that works. Lol
She seems to be licking the incision less, so that’s good. I’m keeping a close eye on it ?

Good to hear! Clever move with the antibiotics!

I hope they both recover quickly! It’s really smart rubbing the AB’s on her paw! Our bunny Breintje also fights as soon as he smells his gas pain meds. Usually it ends up all over his face, but at least he still ingests it when he washes himself.
It’s great to see that you love your bunsters so much ^_^
