        ouch…

so normally, i do monthly vet nail trims with my two.  i cannot trim their nails by myself, Mike does not like to help me (b/c it makes him the “bad guy” i guess…) so it’s easier for all involved to pay the 24 bucks a month and go get them done.

i’m feeding them over the weekend, and i look down and HOLY COW… Mead’s nails are sticking out from her fur (she’s a rex with sore hocks in the past, so it’s especially important she gets frequent trims…)

i check my calendar, they haven’t been in for a trim in just over TWO MONTHS!

i think with the holidays and everything, it just totally slipped my mind!  (BAD BAD BAD Bunny Mama! )

Mike says (when i ask him to help me trim) “just take ’em in to the vet after the New Year…”

I said No (b/c i’m kinda embarassed that i forgot about taking them in…) so i asked my friend to help me last night.  she’s a vet tech, but only works with dogs and cats… she can trim nails tho, so i figured, “this’ll work.”

well, it did work.  we got them all trimmed up.  i’ll have to do it again in 2 weeks (take ’em into the vet), since their quick got a little bit longer than usual.

unfortunately, we were ALMOST done with Mead and she FREAKED and scratched the H*ll out of my left forearm and the top of my hand.

that would never happen at the vet’s office…

LMAO!! I saw the title and thought you must be injured!

I find the scratches heal best if you soap them up nice afterwards heheh

Oh i know, Rose and Hammer are both past due for nail trims. I was actually calling for appointments at the vet before i came on BB. Im afraid to even try to do Rose’s nails, her foster said she does NOT do well with nails. Poor Meadow, you just werent fast enough haha

Yeah – Pepper’s were really long when I looked the other day.  I’m a bad bunny-momma

I gave her a trim, but for he first time I actually nipped the quick and she bled all over the place. I KNOW is was going to be OK but it still freaked me out a bit.

Once we got our second bunny a few months ago- I made it a habit to trim the bunnies nails on/around the 1st of the month when I give the dogs their heartworm prevention pills.

Fortunately my hubby does help with dog, cat or bunny nails.  He won’t trim- but he will hold the pets.  He usually holds the rabbits the same way that he holds the cats.  He sits on the couch and holds them vertical against his body.  It supports their back and gives me easy access to all 4 feet.  If the buns or cats start to struggle to get away- I can easily use both my hands to stop/calm them.  They are pretty used to it now and do not seem to fuss much- although Penny does thump afterwards.  And one of my cats always “hollers” the whole time (he is 10 years old- he should be used to nail trims by now).

Ooops forgot uh ooops.  I have been marking the calender the first of each month between the first and 3rd and do their nails so I don’t forget.  HOwever I have to look at the calendar and be sure I am in the right month. Or I forget too

Don’t worry Beka, it was busy time of year. I trim Jerseys but she is so resistant now. When she was younger I didn’t find it too much of a challenge. I didn’t even know you could take them in to be trimmed then. I just thought her nails looked long and just did them. It’s kinda like now I know more about rabbits, their stressors, bleeding quicks and bunny butt – I’m less confident and she probably picks up on that. Plus the nails become harder. I was much more regular with trims in the beginning and tend to forget a bit now til I get a good scratch and decide it’s time!

Would love to be able to smooth the nail off after a clip but am at a loss. Emery board + patient rabbit? I don’t think so!
