› FORUM › THE LOUNGE › Oh no, No more Papaya Tablets!?
I just went to the vet to buy more Oxbow Papaya Tablets, and there weren’t any on the shelf. So I asked the nurse behind the counter, and she said that Oxbow had DISCONTINUED THEM!!! She said they asked the company if they were going to make anything in their place, but Oxbow hadn’t responded.
I just went to the website, and all quantities of tablets say “Out of Stock.” I just e-mailed them asking about this, but obviously haven’t heard back yet.
HAS ANYONE ELSE HEARD ANYTHING ABOUT THIS?!
I personally know 4 bunnies who are going to be MAD!
![]()
OMG *has heart attack*
IS THIS TRUE???
Mine are already starting a revolt (I can hear them gathering pitchforks and fire I’m scared!!)
I don’t see anything on their site…
I see where it says they’re out of stock… I’ve never bought the tablets before, but would something like this be an acceptable substitute if they have been discontinuted?
http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=8370
It’s not really a tablet, but it’s papaya… and they have pineapple too. Both are 100% dried fruit – no additives or anything. Haven’t tried this either – I just stumbled across it today when I was ordering hay and pellets, but didn’t buy any.
Oh nooo. No more papaya. Yes Cotton Ruby and Honey Bunny are going to go crazy on me. Especially Cotton. Gasp. How horrible.
i hear thumping in the background… uh-oh…
I noticed that Drs Foster and Smith does not even list them on their website anymore…so they obviously do not have them in stock. The critter berries either! I can’t imagine that they would discontinue these! Didn’t someone mention that they participated in a marketing research survery for Oxbow? Maybe they are redesigning the package? Seriously, what’s the scoop????? There are going to be some serious bunny tantrums if there are no more Oxbow papaya tablets made!
We talked to Oxbow on the phone:
What is happening is – in a few months they will be introducing a new version. They didn’t say too much, but they said they would be even healthier. So right now whatever is being sold out there is just what’s left.
The critterberries were discontinued due to costs. I guess some of the ingredients in it just became too expensive. We talked to them and said, geesh, how expensive could it possibly be. People were ordering from us like it the critterberries are bunny crack, so you could have probably raised the rate a bit and it would have been okay.
So, you may be able to find papaya in limited quantities from several stores, but it will run out, but like I said, in a couple of months the new papaya tablets will be introduced, so there shouldn’t be too much lag time.
we dont get papaya tablets over here, havent seen them anywhere
I need uk shipping ![]()
Phew what a relief. I better start biting them in half to make the buns think they are still getting 2 til I can get some more.
I got this pill chopper that cuts them in half I will use that since they don’t taste too good to us humans.
Me! I participated in market research for the new papaya tablets – or rather chunks of dried papaya – for Oxbow.
They looked really good – no sugar, dried papaya, in the nice resealable bag ( like the berries- which agreed – Like bunny crack).
They didn’t look at all like the tablets – but more like dried fruit.
But no date on when they would release them…
If you check out the link I posted above – that sounds essentially like what I found on the Drs F&S yesterday – chunks of dried papaya and dried pineapple. They put it in their bird section, but do you think it would be okay for bunnies too?
At frist I saw this and my heart stopped. Wow. First the critter berries and now this? But it is good to see they are “replacing” them with a new product. However, I think we should all e-mail Oxbow about the critter berries, like BB said, they could have just raised the price.
YAY on even healthier papaya tablets! will they actually be TABLETS, or just small pieces i wonder? guess we shall have to wait and find out…
if you are going to run out within the next couple months, you might want to buy more before they’re all gone…
I just bought a few small containers from Dr. Foster when I ordered food. My buns will be devastated if we run out before they intro the new ones.
Oxbow will be lucky if all our bunnies dont end up on their doorstep protesting. lol Our buns will never understand we are waiting for something a little healthier.
I literally just got the box from Dr. Foster last week so I probably bought some of the last ones they had. Sorry! I wouldnt have bought 3 if I had known they didn’t have enough to go around. ![]()
***ALERT****
There is ONE place you can STILL buy them for now. It is a squirrel company that I have bought oxbow from before. They still have the 500ct in stock. Chris’s squirrels and more.
http://www.squirrelsandmore.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&product_id=2024
Good luck and hopefully she still has some! I emailed Chris to see how many she has and to warn her I was posting this so she may have a lot of bun people coming to her.
I placed an order for 2 bottles at the BinkyBunny Store the second I heard…hope BB still has them! It didn’t say out of stock…
So the new version is more like dried fruit, huh? I already give them dried pineapple…
I’ll miss shaking the tablets in their plastic container, and watching the bunnies scramble over each other and spin in circles…
Me too Lightchick! They come a ‘runnin and a ‘binkyin when they hear that classic rattling of the bottle.
Now I won’t get to see that, I am really disappointed, but the plus side is that the dried papaya pieces will not be sweetened.
i use them as a way to reward for going into the pen at night. i tell them to go home, they jump in the pen, i close the door, then i shake and say “treats” and they’ll both jump all over the closed pen door. they do these flips over each other where one will kinda hop over the others back to get to the other side of the door, like that will make them be dispensed faster. they both stand on hind legs for them, sometimes they’ll even stand and chew at the same time… i call it the “shark frenzy”…
Shark frenzy, my buns do that with banana when they’re lucky enough to get it.
SR – maybe you need to pop a few panadol into the old bottle, shake it and then draw the dried papaya from behind your back
They’ll never know…
I just placed my binkybunny order to get more. I am glad that a healthier version is coming out……. but they love these so much that I had to get one last bottle to get me thru the transition- and now that I am a proud owner of TWO bunnies, I especially can’t slack off in the treat dept.
It can be a lot cheaper to give them dried fruit… I buy it from the bulk scoop bins at Henry’s marketplace. Since my bunny is usually allowed only one piece per day, like a dollar’s worth of unsweetened dried fruit can last a month or more!
I keep them in a “treats” container and shake it when I need Frankie to come downstairs. Works exactly the same as the papaya tablets, but super cheap! The plastic jar was like $4 at Petsmart, not too bad.

Look at Rachel being all LOGICAL! (And spoiling our sentimentalism…)![]()
Here’s what Oxbow replied to my e-mail, FYI.
“Thank you for contacting Oxbow Animal Health. I certainly understand your frustration about our discontinuation of Papaya Tablets; however, we are no longer able to source the ingredients for this product.
Oxbow has been working hard on an exciting replacement product for our Papaya Tablets: Papaya Fruit Plus. All-natural Papaya Fruit Plus contains papain and bromelain-digestive enzymes that are believed to soften food and hairballs in a herbivore’s digestive system. Look for Papaya Fruit Plus in January.
You may still find Papaya Tablets at your local pet food store or contact a store listed in our store locator. You can also try an on-line store such as Drs. Foster and Smith or Pet Food Direct.
In the meantime, please feel free to feed fresh papaya to your pet – up to a ½-inch square piece per day. As with any change in your pet’s diet, you will want to slowly transition your pet to the new food or treat.
Botanical Hay is another option to help your pet avoid GI Stasis.
Again, Oxbow apologizes for the inconvenience that our discontinuation of Papaya Tablets has caused. Please feel free to contact our Customer Care staff if you have any further questions or concerns.”
I just got an email from Chris at the squirrel online store. She has only 5 Papaya tablet 500ct bottles left.
FOUND SOME!!!! This is as of this morning.
They have about only about 42 500ct left and not that many left on the 200ct containers.
