Well, I was just sitting here on the computer and I looked up and saw Jasmine humping the crap out of Bunny. I jumped up, grabbed Jasmine (after a bit of a chase), and lo and behold she has a penis. (sigh). Well, I’m definately glad I got Bunny spayed a couple of months ago! Maybe this explains the persistent marking behavior of Jas. Guess I’ll need to call the vet… and think of a new name! (She… I mean, he, is three months old this week… is that too young for a neuter? I don’t want him hurting Buns!)
oopsie! good thing there’s no chance of a surprise litter
Basically, the bunny can get neutered once his testicles have dropped. I am not sure how to tell this myself but from what I heard, you’ll be able to tell when it happens. If they haven’t already, they should within the next couple of weeks.
I know! And everyone I know thought I was crazy for spaying a rabbit; but at least they are all informed of the health benefits of it now (which is originally why I did it)!
I’m worried about him hurting her because he’s trying to do it alot (now that I’m noticing it). I seperated them, but I don’t know how long it will be before I neuter him so I feel kind of bad keeping him cooped up. She seems happy though (doing binkies and running around, although I don’t know if it’s because he’s out of her hair or just general happiness).
My boy was 6 monthes before i had him fixed…but i do belive it is when they drop and some times that can be 3 to 4 months.
Oh my word. I’m glad you noticed as Bunny may have retalitated with a vicious nip and even better that she is neutered. If mounted backwards, females have been known to castrate males with their teeth or cause severe damage, so it is good to be viligant. Sexing a young rabbit it not easy and I’m sorry that a mis-identification happened. Maybe call him Jess or Jazzy? Once the testicles descend, they can be neutered but it is also up to the vet when they do it as well. If they are too young then they risk injury of the internal organs. Usually it is around 3-4 months, some vets wait until 5. You might want to keep an eye on Bunny for any false pregnancy. Poor things and poor you!
The couple of times that I saw him do it, Bunny didn’t seem all that bothered… but she’s very laid back, whereas Jas is more aggressive. He steals the food out of her mouth even though there is plenty right in front of him, but Bunny just shrugs it off. He pees everywhere in the pen and is very very slow at becoming socialized, as opposed to Bunny who came out of her shell within a couple of weeks and was litter box trained from the start (at least for pee). She doesn’t seem too bothered when he mounts her, she just seems to sit there and wait until he finishes and then she runs off to continue playing.
I don’t think he will hurt her…I had a friend who had a female spayed and her room mate had a male…He mounted her all the time and no one was bothered. I think as long as she isn’t upset you don’t need to worry!
That’s very upsetting to find out a pet isnt’ the sex you thought they were…It’s a long story but my parents had a budgie who was ‘darwin’ for years as she was tagged a male…and then turned out to be a female! So good that Bunny is spayed
Can I suggest the name Justin? Sound’s similar to Jasmine ![]()
That story reminds me of when I brought my black lop Velvet home. We thought it was a boy bunny because he would always hump the begeeberz out of my boyfriend’s black, furry monster slippers. Guess they looked pretty appealing to a furry, black bun. When it was time to visit the vet, lo and behold, Velvet was a girl! I never thought girl bunnies did that! I have to admit though, it was pretty funny.
When I first got Lion-O and brought him to the vet even she couldn’t for sure if he was a boy or a girl! (She’s quite experience with rabbit care) He was about 4 months old at the time but his testicles hadn’t dropped yet, and for whatever reason he was refusing to stick out his penis no matter how much she poked and prodded and used lube to slick away his hair so she could get a better look and feel. LOL The poor thing was being held tight by a vet tech and prodded by the vet while I stood next to him and tried to reassure him. In the end the vet had to say that she was 80% sure that he was a boy, but to be sure I had to bring him back in a month to check again. Needless to say he was QUITE unhappy with me by the time I brought him back home. Poor little guy!

*giggles* Poor thing. There was a small extremely fluffly bun at Red Door, and none of the volunteers could figure out whether it was an immature male or a female. Poor thing was being prodded and upended every 15 minutes, and was running out of patience for it.
I was petsitting my friend’s male rabbit over Thanksgiving and the new male rabbit’s presence caused Brambles to start humping Vicky a number of times…poor girl! He’s gone now and they’re back to normal.
Our boy DJ is like that. Whenever we have a male rabbit in the house as a foster, DJ starts chasing his friend Curly Sue like crazy.
