I joined a couple weeks ago when I rescued a bunny from going to the meat man, even if she wasn’t going (you know where) I was bringing her home with me!! She is a mature Californian girl.
She surprised me today with NINE BABIES!!! When I brought her home, I found blood in her litter pan and around her kennel, I suspected that she lost the babies. (the store told me she may be pregnant) So, this really was a surprise! Last week I saw a sore on the bottom of her foot (now healed!) I thought that may be where the blood came from (probably never know for sure) Sorry if this is hard to follow, I’m a little excited at the moment and want to share all the details with you!! Last night I was laying on the floor with her and noticed how BIG she was, she let me feel her belly, both sides at the same time, and I felt the babies moving and kicking on both sides!! I knew then, no question!! I made her her another nest box and lined it with newspaper and then a bed of hay on top, this morning I got up and checked…..she had all the newspaper dug up and shredded in a mound and hay and fur on top!! She had 4 babies laying just inside the nest box and 5 babies laying in the back corner of the nest! I put them all together in the back and covered them with her fur, all look happy and healthy. Happi is eating and drinking and using her litter box. (go Happi!) I looked for any wandering babies, I’m sure I found all of them. So we are all excited and can’t wait to watch them grow!
I do have two questions #1 why did she have them in two spots in the nest? #2 they all look different, some are white, dark, pink, and spotted! Whats up with that??
I wasn’t sure where to put this, hope the lounge was ok.
Oh wow! I love Californians she must be so pretty (: Sounds like the babies have quite a variety of markings. Can you post pics? ![]()
Oh yes, pics soon!! Maybe tonight! ![]()
Oh gosh – It seems so long ago since you first posted about Happi – and now the babies! I’m flabbergasted
! So you have some white, some dark, some pink and some spotted? Or pink with dark spots? The babies are born furless, the pink skin is where the white fur will grow, the darker pigment where the coloured fur will grow. It doesn’t take very long before the fur grows. If you are seeing some already with white and/or dark fur then I’m thinking perhaps they were born a day or so before the others? If possible… That may be why there are two nests also. I don’t know! Does anyone know if it’s possible for there to be 2 placentas? Impregnation at 2 different times? Anyway -what an experience! Guess you have your hands full with 10 rabbits now!
Can’t wait for pics!!! ![]()
Im jelous! My babys died
Makes me very sad….
Congrats, Grandma! And you thought you were getting A bun – he, he, he!
I don’t know much about baby buns – but there are plenty of members who do that can give you great advice.
I do know that the baby’s could be from different bucks. And that they could be to pregnancies – 2 placentas – at the same time.
Good luck Happi!
Cant wait for pics!

Surprise Litter of Babies! What to do now? - Dana Krempels, Ph.D.
Here are a couple links about baby bunnies. Wow, NINE?! I don’t have experience with baby bunnies, but I know some other people have had accidental litters also, so I will leave any questions open to them.
I think Dad was not the same breed as Mom- Californian- otherwise I think you would see babies that all looked alike. But it sounds like Dad passed on some other markings and maybe other colors to the babies.
What you are seeing now is most likely pigment- and an idea of what the markings will look like- though I think it will be a while yet before you can determine color, but the patterns are showing.
From my understanding, Californians have a distinct marking standard- and they don’t really vary from that (unlike Mini Lops which as a breed could have varying patterns/solids/shadings). That is what makes me suspect that Dad was a different breed. How exciting though to have a litter with distinct looking babies- I think that is more interesting than 9 that all look alike.
I don’t know about 2 placentas and 2 litters at same thing. Maybe they crawled around and ended up in a pile in 2 places. Sometimes they hand on to the Mom bunny’s teats and get dragged around and some hang on and come out of the nextbox too.
OH boy how exciting. And a large litter too. The mother nurses them at nite 2x once in the nite and once in the wee hours of the morning. You may never see her nurse them depending on your bed time. Otherwise you may be thinking she pays them no mind. But she does when we are usually sleeping.
Just wait til they start opening their eyes and getting more coordinated. Then hopping out of the nest. They are so cute. Too bad they grow so fast.
The Mom will need extra food. Some alfalfa hay or pellets will help keep her in shape and nursing. Normally if a baby falls out of the nest box you can put it back in with your hand. When they get some furr on you can handle them to get them well socialized and adjusted to people.

oH by the way dang I forgot what I was going to say oh drat, OH yes now I got it. The Mom knows what to do and usually the bunny moms parent doesnt’ have to really do anything. She will know what to do.
Hmm that 2 placenta thing. I think that might be true. Interesting. I will have to look that up online.
Wow – sounds like quite a surprise. I know a few members here have gone through similar situations so hopefully they can help with any questions you may have!
Thanks everybunny for your replies and advice! Happi and babies are doing very well! I’ve increased her greens and am free feeding her pellets till she is done nursing, and of course all the hay she can eat!! I promise, pics soon!! ![]()
