Another health problem I’m afraid. Little Frosty had a cyst lanced when we collected him from the shelter. He was recovering from the op. Anyway, my vet wasn’t satisfied when she saw him that he was fully healed. So when he was neutered she cut it fully out alongside his other lumps . Turns out it was a sebum cyst. However, as he was healing from that operation, he’s produced another cyst right beside his -hope nobody is about to have their dinner -surgical incision (on his back, not down below) I wonder if anyone else has this bizarre condition with their rabbit? Is it like a bunny achne? Sebum / spots. He’s going back to the vet anyway but any experience would be gratefully recieved.

p.s. it is deep beneath the skin, no open wounds or discharge. nice.

Oh my word. Poor fella. There is a bit of a write up on it, but it is not rabbit specific: http://www.vin.com/VINDBPub/SearchPB/Proceedings/PR05000/PR00094.htm

I hope that something can be done, pease keep us updated!

Is a sebum cyst the same as a sebacious (sp?) cyst?  My golden retriever is struggling with these right now and they are a royal pain.  Not sure if they are the same.  But as soon as we have one removed another one pops up. She now has her 4th one.

The sebacious gland secretes sebum.  I would assume that the terms are being used interchangeably and that the sebum is causing the clog of the sebacious gland or debris like skin cells. A sebacious cyst is a sebacious gland that becomes clogged.

I learned a lot about this stuff in my teenage years, I was *blessed* with cystic acne.  I was looking for some good info and Wikipedia to the rescue and there are pictures too. Sebaceaous gland

It sure sounds the same then.  Our dog has had 3 surgically removed from her shoulder area and they have not come back.  She has one on her hip now that had gotten really large really quickly and burst BUT the vet scraped it out and we had to keep draining it and it looks as if we might have succeeded in keeping it small and manageable. It is a very cheesy material that comes out and really gross when it is infected. I don’t know if you can manage these with rabbits or not.  But that is my experience with these dang cysts and it has been with a dog only.  Some animals are just prone to getting them. I feel for you because they are a drag to have to deal with especially with a rabbit.

poor frosty!  i’ve had experience with this – me, not the bunny – and learned that it’s mostly a hormonal issue… for humans anyways.  explains why its a problem for youth.  weight can also affect hormone levels.   i wonder if it’s related to frosty’s hormones and now that he’s been neutered it’ll ease up?  wishful thinking?  good luck!

I had a problem with this when I was younger. I actually had one in my ear that had to be removed surgically. After the first time, it came back because they didn’t get all of it, but then they removed the little bit they had left and it never came back. If this spot is in virtually the same spot as the other one, is it possible they missed some of the original cyst.

Thanks so much for all your help. Apparently you can treat this condition with applying a small amount of heat (pad or something similar) to the area and they become reabsorbed. Has anyone heard about this? Anyhow, if the vet suggests another anethetised operation, my instinct is to wait a short while, he’s been through enough stress lately with being re-homed, neutered, cyst removal, christmas, other bunnies sniffing around him, etc. They may convince me otherwise, but we’ll see, appointment is this week. Thanks for all your experiences. I would myself imagine this was a hormonal problem, so fingers crossed. Poor frozzers got acne!

That would be great if you could treat with just heat!! I’d imagine with their delicate skin you couldn’t put some clearasil on it?
It does sound like a good idea to wait and let him de-stress a little before any surgery!! I hope he’s not self-conscious about his acne
                                  *VIBES!* for frosty

yes, heat sounds like a lot less stress than other options. I haven’t heard about it either, but don’t have a lot of experience with cysts either. But if it’s a less invasive option, it sounds like it’s worth a try!

Just a note of caution, you want to be very careful using anything on a bunny, not only because of the safety of the product on the rabbit, but they will likely lick it off as well. Definately get a blessing from your vet before trying anything.

It sounds like a good idea to try the heat and let him de-stress for awhile (hey, sounds like he needs one of those “warm stone massages” ) Let us know how it goes with the warm heating pad, I have not seen this medical condition before, so I would be interested to see how it goes. My buns send some nice healing vibes for Frosty!
