So whilst cleaning the night pens this morning, I noticed that Pippi’s ear has a few small scratches on the inside (her right ear) and I have to conclude that since she and Mimzy were going at it so hard the other day that I had to divide the xpens into two separate chambers, one of their tussles must’ve ended up like this.

She’s been shaking her head a bit since the other day, but I hadn’t seen the ear scratched until today. There is no suppuration or swelling, just looks like a few 1/2 inch sized scratches. I just trimmed her nails a week and a half ago and the edges are smotthed out, so I kind of doubt she did this to herself.

Any suggestions on care? Do I need to ptu cream on it or anything or will it heal on it’s own okay?

Poor little thing. I warned her she needed to take it easy with Mimzy, she’s been pushing him for weeks now and I think he’d finally had enough and gave her what for!

Goodness! Have your buns been bonded long? I can’t really help you, but hopefully someone can!

when baby bun’s ear was bitten by pinky the warrior princess the vet gave me an antibiotic cream to rub on it.  mind you it was way more than a scratch… it was almost (but not quite) a through & through bite!  and i didn’t discover it until a few days later

the sore looked like it had been a round bump which had drained & caved in (ew) and my vet had to peel off the scab (double ew) so that the antibiotic could be better applied to the wound.  also, the wound had redness radiating from it… in other words the supposedly healthy skin around the sore had reddened which was a sign of infection.  eta… in the pic below you can’t see the redness because the flash faded the color.

so from my experience i’d say if the skin around the scratches looks reddened or if there’s swelling i’d def goto see your vet.  otherwise i think you can gently keep the area clean with a damp face cloth.  you can use neosporin on rabbits right?  if yes, then you could swab a bit on with a q-tip.

how do the scratches look now?

They were actually much better looking this morning, thank you. If I’d thought it was worth a trip to the vet, no fear I’d have been ther ein a thrice. But thanks for the advice too, I shall tuck it away for future reference.
Don’t know about the neosporin…I was going to try it, then I stopped myself because I know it’s an antibiotic, bunnies lick the ends of their ears when they wash them and I was also afraid she might get it on her paws. So I decided to just wait and see.
She likes the area rubbed and I knew that would rush circulation to the area also, so this I did for her. They weren’t open scratches when I discovered them, so I didn’t use anything wet on them that might reopen them.
They seem much better today. No sign of swelling or redness and no real scabs to speak of other than what covers the area in a normal scratch.

STILL can’t figure out how it happened. >_0 This is the main thing that worries me now. I’m going to have to keep a much better eye on them whilst they are co-mingling from now on. *nods*

OUWCH about the ear bite! 0_o; Poor Baby! Of course the first thing that came to mind upon reading that was the thread in another forum about the ear piercings and tattoos. >_<

Sounds like it’s much better Neosporin/polysporin is fine to use, just don’t use the “plus’ kind. Otherwise you can go to town!

yeah poor baby bun has taken quite a beating from pinky.  cured her of her dreams of dominance thats for sure!   it’s amazing how scratches like what you’re dealing with can appear without explanation even when you’re watching isn’t it?  i figured you’d hike to the vets if it looked suspicious… it’s always nice to avoid a vet bill if it’s not neccessary!  anyways, glad it’s looking better

and k&k… good to know about the neosporin.  i think i knew that from before but in the meantime my vet recommended it for the dog and i forgot if it was also good for buns.
