Sooo excited!! Ok, so, I am really searching for a career with animals that’s not veterinary (although I’d love to help animals that way, I’m just toooo squeemish for that!) Anyways I was tossing around the idea of zookeeping, and contacted our zoo and jumped through some hoops etc. and I’m on as a volunteer!!! WOOHOO!!

I had my first volunteer shift on tuesday and I’m now volunteering from 530-1100 on Monday nights! It was fantastic, we prepared food for the animals and then did ’rounds’ putting all the animals in for the night and feeding some of them! I got to feed a tiger (OK, I dumped some meat on the floor in a feeding room which he was then allowed in to eat but still!!) and I got to see the new baby red panda’s up close! I’m working with the keeper who is hand-raising a baby gibbons! She said next week we’ll get the food prep done faster and do even more fun stuff! I’m soo excited

That’s great.  How fun!  Maybe you can secretly plaster some posters all around about NOT buying/adopting a bunny for Easter!!!!

That’s awesome. My friend did her high school co-op program at our zoo and she loved it.

                Congrats!

I love Zoos. Even though I wish there was enough room foe them to all run free – it is so amazing to get to see the animals.
My mom volunteered at a Zoo for a while and loved it.

In case any one is interested, Here is a link to a really great story about zoos I found through NPR – It is called “Life, Death And the Paradox of freedom.

It’s always good to see people contributing regardless of money. I volunteer at the aquarium and I always come home with satisfaction.

Wow, that is so cool.  Sounds like fun.  Hopefully all of their monkeys are well behaved enough not to sling poo at you.

Everytime I go to our zoo- the monkeys are either sleeping or well….not, sleeping.  Well, I guess it is educational for the kids.

What are some of your favorite animals there?

That is great. That would be so much fun.

Well, the zoo is my “selfish” volunteering…It’s for experience and fun more then they really need it. My contribution volunteering right now, is volunteering with a horse rescue, an animal advocacy group and am just starting at our humane society.

I think my favorite animals so far would have to be the baby red panda’s-they were hand raised and are sooo sweet!!

I love lemurs! I’m kind of jealous. You’re lucky you get to feed the animals instead of just scooping up their poop! Ha

I know, and I didn’t think we’d get to touch animals at all since with zookeeping you minimize contact with the animals so it’s as natural as possible…however it’s a small zoo (still a registered zoo and everything) and ALOT of the animals were seized from people who owned them illegally or were given up by owners, and still others were orphaned and hand raised….SO many of the animals love and appreciate hand contact! It’s super neat!!

My first day I volunteered I met the zookeeper who is hand raising a baby gibbons: her name is penelope and here’s a couple pics of her!

(I didn’t take the pics, penelope is a bit of a celebrity around edmonton!)
