        Hi,

I volunteer at the local Humane Society, I’m there every Saturday.  I help with the cats and dogs, but always bring veggies for the rabbits (when they have them).  Last Saturday I saw they had a momma bun and 3 babies. I asked if they needed a foster home and they said yes, I brought them home that day.  So I haven’t had them a week yet. With the foster buns and my own buns, I have 8 rabbits!

Ok so here is my issue.  When I return the buns in a month, I want the people adopting them to have some basic information/education, because I don’t think the shelter provides it, because I don’t think they know much about caring for rabbits. (They keep them in such small cages, and like I said, I provide the veggies). I want to offer information like: what to feed the babies (they are 4 weeks old now),  what best to keep them in (not a cage and inside), toys, exercise, where to find more information on rabbits (here and House Rabbit Society).  I would print the information and ask the shelter to give it to the people adopting, or thinking of adopting. If I take information from this website, and House Rabbit Society website, can I reprint it?   Any other ideas?  It will be so hard to give the rabbits back, but if I know they are going to a good home and will be treated right then it would be easier for me.

The momma is a good bun.  She has not shown any aggression towards me, I have been able to carefully pick her up, she tolerates being petted (more so than my buns).  They are all white and have fur like velvet.

        Thanks in advance,
        Laura

Wow that sounds like a good idea.  Soft as velvet and the mom bunny loves pettings cool

Yes we worry so much about where they will go and how good a home they get.   Giving this website addy may be a good start.

I can’t answer on the copy right stuff.

If you give credit-it’s not copyright. People generally know if they put something on the web, it’s not their’s anymore; Also they can certainly protect their page from being printed or copy/pasted.

give the link if it’s a website, and author if you know it, and name the site; like this

Find diet info on BinkyBunny.com The House Rabbit Community-

            Or this

All about E. Cuniculi at House Rabbit Society, written by Marinell Harriman in consultation with Carolynn Harvey, DVM and Cynthia Besch-Williford, DVM, PhD and found here http://www.rabbit.org/journal/3-2/e-cuniculi.html

As long as you give credit you can reprint

You can print any page on BinkyBunny.com, but we definitely would appreciate a credit.  (Information and photos by BinkyBunny.com)

Our main goal is to educate so we are happy for people to use it for that purpose, but it took us a long time to put it all together and we will continue to add and perfect, and so of course, making sure that that effort is credited is appreciated.  Thank you.

,Also, within our pages, where we have gotten information directly, we have cited the source via a link on that page and/or in the “About Us” section.

Plus, this forum can be a great resource for the adopters – Which is a great way for us to help, as well for you and other volunteers and rescue groups to keep track of and reach out to their adopters for continued help and/or just a fun connection.

If your Humane Society is open to it, I can send you a bunch of little reference/business cards for BinkyBunny.com that they can put into their “adoption” packet. If that’s something you’d be interested in, let me know – just email “BinkyBunny” through the message center.

              Edited:  THANK YOU FOR ASKING!

                K&K,
I actually disagree. I am pretty sure you have to contact the author, even if it is on the internet, and request permission to reprint. Copyright applies automatically to all things created now – you don’t have to specify that it is with a (c) or registering it.
Only if you don’t receive a reply from the author after several tries can you go ahead and reprint, being covered under the protection of having made a “good faith effort.” If the author is reached, they can give you perm,, deny it, state their copyright line preference, or just charge you a fee for it.
The problem with the internet is that it’s hard for an author to enforce those who reprint their work. A large co. I’ve had dealings with at work has an entire legal staff that mans the webcrawlers looking for copyright violators and contacting them to stop using their brand in reprints, etc. Very slippery slope.
I advocate the old fashioned method of reading, paraphrasing, and citing in a bibliography.

Laura, at work, I tell everyone about BB. I just write the URL down on a piece of paper with my email address. I’m sure you’ll probably want to do more than but that’s pretty much the end of my copyright knowledge. I know in school I have to cite everything even if it is online.

Here is the information from House Rabbit Society – the encourage you to print and use their information but here are their guidelines:

Reprint, Press, Photo, and Translation Guidelines

                    Reprint Guidelines
You can feel free to reprint any of the documents at our website for nonprofit use that is not philosophically opposed to our mission if you follow our reprint guidelines. You don’t need to contact us beforehand, but we’d appreciate it if you would send us a copy of the reprint in context after it has been published.
Please note: these guidelines apply only to printed materials. Our documents and photos may not be reprinted online. Instead link to the articles/photos at our website, http://www.rabbit.org

                    – Give credit to the original author of the material. If an individual author is not listed, you can give credit to the House Rabbit Society.
                    – The credit should also indicate how to contact House Rabbit Society: House Rabbit Society, 148 Broadway, Richmond, CA 94804; http://www.rabbit.org.

                    – We ask that you send us a copy of the item in its reproduced context (newsletter, flyer, etc.). If you obtained the original from the web, you can send your reprint to House Rabbit Society, 148 Broadway, Richmond, CA 94804.
                    Press Use Guidelines

You can feel free to use information from the HRS website for an article on rabbits, Easter, or House Rabbit Society as long as you follow the following guidelines. We’d appreciate it if you would send us a copy of the article after it has been published.
                    – If quoting, give credit to the original author of the material. If an individual author is not listed, you can give credit to the House Rabbit Society.

                    – The credit should also indicate how to contact House Rabbit Society: House Rabbit Society, 148 Broadway, Richmond, CA 94804; http://www.rabbit.org.
                    – Members of the press who need an image of a rabbit to accompany an article about House Rabbit Society or rabbits may go to House Rabbit Society’s Smug Mug page to download a photo for your use.

                    Photo Use Guidelines

Please do not use any photos from this website without permission. Go to House Rabbit Society’s Smug Mug page to download a photo for your use. You may use the photo we send you as long as your article is not philosophically opposed to our mission and you follow the following guidelines:
                    – Give credit to the photographer if stated. If an individual photographer is not listed, you can give credit to House Rabbit Society.

                    – The credit should also indicate how to contact House Rabbit Society: House Rabbit Society, 148 Broadway, Richmond, CA 94804; http://www.rabbit.org.

                    Translation Guidelines
                    – Translate entire documents. This way, the information is not taken out of context. What is an entire document? In most cases it’s an entire HTML document.

                    – Clearly indicate the date of the translation, so people will know how old/out of date the document may be. This is especially critical for medical documents.
                    – Provide the url of the original document, indicating that the most up-to-date version of the document can always be found at the original location.

                    – Give credit to the original author of the material. If an individual author is not listed, you can give credit to the House Rabbit Society.
                    – Clearly state that the HRS is not responsible for accuracy of the translation.

                    – Each document should let the user know how they can contact the House Rabbit Society. If the information is on-line, provide a link within your translated document to the original HRS home page. If the information is to be printed, place our postal address on the page.
                    – Please feel free to distribute the translation in paper or email versions for any nonprofit use you may want.

                    – Provide us with an electronic copy of your translation. We would much prefer to host the translation on the web ourselves, so that many others may point to it and we can be sure and keep it up to date.

The copyright infringement stuff only really occurs if you are making a profit off of someone else’s copy or you are injuring the reputation or business of the copy owner. If you make a brochure stating the information you find on the the house rabbit website and give credit to the webiste, you’ll be fine.

All wonderful information. Thanks so much.

ANYTIME I find out that someone has a rabbit I tell them about this website. I come here for most all of my rabbit info and ideas. (Though don’t have time to post/answer others questions, as often as I would like).

LOL I am going to disagree It only applies if you are making a profit-ie. publishing a book etc. If you are referencing/citing sources, your allowed. Also it depends on the material.

I pulled some relevant stuff about copyright that might help

“Works that are not sufficiently original, or which constitute facts, a method or process cannot enjoy copy protection” I think this is big for you; your working with facts. “U.S. Courts do not recognize the “sweat of the brow” doctrine, which originally allowed protection for those who labored to collect and organize facts.”

“A copyrighted work may contain elements which are not copyrightable, such as facts, ideas, themes, or content in the public domain. “

That is so true about people adopting a pet and not knowing how to properly take care of them! I had never had a rabbit before in my life and when I was thinking of getting Hunny, I did my homework online and educated myself before I decided to buy her because I knew it would be a great responsibility and how important it would be to get her fixed if I so decided to get a female which I did. I am so glad that I did that. Luckily, the breeder gal kept in contact with me all the time to make sure I was doing fine with her. I emailed her to let her know of Hunny’s progress and she says now that her children always look forward to seeing the pictures I send her of her.

I usually find that I am educating THEM.  Recently someone (that I get coffee from every day) got a baby bunny a few months ago and I’m always giving her information and I also gave her this website, that the checks out when she has time.

                                Thx Jennifer.

Thanks everyone for giving all the info regarding the copyright – it can be tricky with the net. I have read so much information lately that can confirm and contradict that I can’t confirm or deny with 100% confidence what anyone has stated. (in part/context or whole) But bottomline is I want this info to be out there for everyone. The site includes “facts” that can be found on many House Rabbit Sites as well as information that I have learned from my rabbit-savvy vets, classes & seminars, books, experience as a rabbit rescue volunteer, mixed in with advice, tips and tricks from my own experiences as well as what has worked for others. Just a mis mash of what I have learned AND experienced over the last 10 years put into a “hopefully” easy to understand basic resource, and all we have ever asked, as a courtesy, is that we are referenced.  I love it when people use this information to help others . So thank you for spreading the bunny word .

Desma – That is great. I wish more people were like you, and it sounds like the breeder really cares about her bunnies as well.

Laura – Again, thanks for educating others. It can get frustrating at times.

That’s great that you are going to try and put something together! I wouldn’t put too much info into it since it is so readily available online and if it’s too long, some people not read it all, but definitely hit on some of the key points (housing, diet, health) and then provide links of where they can go to do more research.

Does your rescue require a waiting period after the application and after meeting the bunny? It would be good to provide the educational info BEFORE they take the bunny home so they have some time to read it and review the links. This way if they do decide it is too much, they have a chance to back out. Your rescue may even put in a statement that the person signs saying they have received and read the educational information provided.

I made the info packet. I will bring it to the shelter on Saturday and have the Director take a look at it, hopefully she will approve of it and use it.

Laura- my local House Rabbit Society has a packet w/ info on everything you asked, including how to bond bunnies. I have an electronic copy you could use but you would need to replace a few pages like the info on local vets. We even have a page dedicated to fun stuff like this site, Language of Lagamorphs website, where to buy food and fun toys online, etc.

If you are interested let me know and I can email it to you. You would need to leave the packet intact since it belongs to the HRS but then you can remove the page on Local Vets and replace it w/ your own.

It also has great photos if you are interested. I have one that has photos and one w/out photos.

During my time volunteering at my local Humane Society this was something I put in place that was required to go home w/ every person that adopted a bun. And we would put extras out on the front desk for those who wanted them.

Also..talk to your local HRS and see if they will mail you copies of their quarterly newsletters to put out front at your HS as well. We did this too and people loved seeing all the great info out there on rabbits.

OMG! I AM SO EXCITED! The director of the Humane Society wrote me back today and loved all my ideas. They WILL use the rabbit info packet I made them AND will now require ALL rabbits be fixed/altered before adoption. I just can’t believe it.

THANKS to all of YOU for your help. We make bunny lives better!

That is a major step!!! The info packet is important and a good idea… but SPAYING AND NEUTERING BEFORE ADOPTION! That is a BIG VICTORY for the bunnies!

That’s great Laura. What an incredible achievement about the spaying and neutering. Kudos to you, and kudos the the humane Society for being open and willing to listen, and make such positive changes. You should be sooo proud of yourself!

                                                        Yahooo!

Hi, Laura! (Waves energetically from down Olympia way) Another source for handouts might be the Tacoma-Pierce County Human Society. That’s where Bean came from and they seem to be very bunny-savvy. Darcy is in charge of the fostering program and a very smart lady when it comes to buns. You can contact her via email from their webpage at http://www.thehumanesociety.org/contact.php (I don’t want to post her email and have a spambot grab it) Her email addy is near the bottom of the page; look for “Darcy W.”

A great big “THANK YOU!!!!” to you and all the other foster-moms out there. If it wasn’t for you guys being willing to put in the time and, hardest of all, being willing to let them go, our buns wouldn’t be as wonderful as they are.

Quantum – you can also message Laura the email via the little envelope underneath her avatar.  This way it emails her to her box here on binkybunny but remains private – away from those nasty spambots.

Laura, at work, I tell everyone about BB. I just write the URL down on a piece of paper with my email address. I’m sure you’ll probably want to do more than but that’s pretty much the end of my copyright knowledge. I know in school I have to cite everything even if it is online.

Katie, since finding this website, I have told other people about it SOOO many times… .random people looking at bunnies in the pet store, middle school girls that I volunteer with, coworkers, etc. =)

I had a question, and I’m sorry if it’s already been mentioned in this thread, I just skimmed all the entries….  I just made a youtube page so I can post videos of Leroy, and I want to use the vids as a way to advocate for proper rabbit care as well as to show off his cuteness.  Of course, I can’t type everything there is to know about rabbits in that tiny info box, so I was wondering if I could type the links to binky bunny and HRS in the box and suggest that people visit those sites?  Is linking to other sites a copywrite infringement?
