oats

are oats okay for buns?  Moreland loves them. he growls at me for them, its pretty funny and if i take the container away he gets pissy.  how much should he get a day?

What kind of oats are they? I believe non-processed, non-minute oats are OK as a small treat (ie. we put them in our home made bunny cookies) but shouldn’t be fed as a regular thing.

they are non minute oats.  he eats about a small handful  ie. maybe smaller than 1/4 cup a day.  too much? he totally loves them.  how do you make yourbunny cookies?

Yes, 1/4 cup is too much. You should only give a small spoonful – I would add it to his pellets when you do give them to him.

Bunny cookies-> In a blender, blend carrots, papaya, banana anything they like, then fold in oats until its a doughy texture. Bake at 350 until crisp!

How many of those cookies do you feed them at a time? How big do you make them?

Very small, like the size of a thumbnail and maybe one every couple of days-good point! I should have specified

I am commonly known for all the baking I do- especially the dog cookies!  And I was going to make a batch of bunny cookies- but I will occasionally order a bag of APD cookies if I am ordering from a good rabbit supply place- and by the time i break the cookies into 3rd’s….one little bag lasts forever!

But keep in mind, that when you make bunny cookies- if you leave out raisins and grapes, or anything else that your dog/bird might be sensitive too, they should be fine to function as a dog treat or as a parrot treat!  The main thing is really the grapes/raisins for dogs- the toxicity of them is not clearly understood, but has been shown- so better safe than sorry.

So a mix of oats, fruits, veggies, etc- is healthy for your dog and other pets too.  I doubt you could get a typical cat to eat them though    Most would find it not worthy of their taste buds (without some of the nonrabbit friendly additives- cheese, chicken stock, etc).

Ohhh you know katnip it cannot be under-stated the toxicity of raisins and grapes!! So many dog owners understand the chocolate thing but not the raisin/grape thing….apparently it’s from a large dose (Not yet quantified, but proportianate to weight) and causes liver failure-is that right?)

Drue loves them too and for a few days I was doing that but then I thought it might be bad and stopped doing it but he LOVES them, so if he was allowed a small spoonful daily he’d be the happiest bunny on earth!

Usually grape/raisin toxicity is from then ingesting a larger quanity- but they have not found any correlation between store bought grapes/ home grown grapes/ seeded or seedless grapes.  So they have not been able to isolate the factor that causes the toxicity- whether it is the seeds or even chemicals used- there are just too many cases that defy theories.
