Hey guys!

I am soon to be a first time bunny owner. I bought feline pine and have hay from oxbow and small pet select. I would like to know if anywhere in the NYC area other options for litter and hay are available for a better value(brand/location)? How do you transport your bun to the vet?train?car? What vets do you use? Lastly, are there any social activities such as hoppy hours at local rescues or centers for buns to interact? Or just to meet other bunny owners?

There is a chapter of the House Rabbit Society in NYC. http://www.rabbitcare.org/index.htm

They have a list of sources of hay, but it looks like they are all mail order companies, which are not going to be very cheap. I get my hay from drsfostersmith.com, who often has sales and they normally have free shipping when you buy at least $19 worth of items. Sometimes they have free shipping no matter what amount you are spending. I get Oxbow pellets and hay, and American Pet Diner hay from there. They have other brands too.

I don’t know how far away you would have to travel to find a farm or place that sells bales of horse hay. That’s a lot more economical than buying hay in bags. But most of us don’t have access to hay farms.

The cheapest litter pellets will be either horse stall pellets, such as Equine Pine, or wood stove pellets (with no accelerants). Those both come in large bags, around 40 pounds for only about $6.00. They can be found at feed stores, horse supply stores, big box stores like Home Depot, hardware stores or Tractor Supply. I don’t know if any of those stores are in or near NYC.

You can contact that HRS chapter and ask if they have any activities for rabbit or places to meet other owners. They do have a list of rabbit savvy vets on their website.

I live in upper Hudson valley, and without a car so… traveling with Bun can be rough! I get our hay from Rabbit Hole Hay.. it’s the only hay my gal will eat. I buy 5lbs a month ( not the cheapest hay, but I was lucky enough to get a bunny with fancy taste buds! Even more lucky, though, that she is a very healthy hay eater) and it’s delivered to our door. I’m considering trying their Timothy hay pellets with my next order to try and get two things done at once. Otherwise, I typically just buy Kaytee Timothy Complete from pet stores. As for her litter and her Oxbow treats, I place a Chewy order every other month and let those come to my door too! I have found that chewy has some of the best prices… and for most of these online stores, you can sign up for auto shipment subscriptions for the products you know you use regularly and you can choose how often they ship it.
