Not to be cheap, but…

 Just wondering if any of you guys wouldn’t mind sharing how much it cost you to get your buns neutered? I got an estimate from my vet (who seems really great so far) and it seems pretty high to me. Mind you, I live in Hawaii so everything is ridiculously expensive, and the cost isn’t going to determine whether or not I have it done or anything, but it’s definitely more than I was expecting and I guess I’m just curious. The estimate is $350-425, and includes everything–post-op meds and all that. I’m totally new to pet ownership and vet bills, so I guess I didn’t really know what to expect for this sort of thing. Anyway, just curious…

Peppy’s spay cost around that price range too. Definitely depends on where you live…I’ve seen some prices on here that make me pretty jealous, haha.

My girls spay was around 200, my Squirrel was about 170 to get neutered. That much for a neuter is crazy!

Like Peppypoo said, it depends so much on what area you’re in. One of our forum leaders lives in Connecticut and she paid a lot for her boy’s neuter. I think it was within that range. Have you called other exotic vets? I would look up every rabbit vet you can find within a 1 hour drive and ask for an estimate for a male rabbit neuter. You don’t need to fully interview them, just do this to get the price range for your area. That will tell you if this vet is on the high end, or if they’re all that much.

I rang around when I had Piglet neutred. Not many Rabbit savvy vets in our area. The first one quoted $70 more as they were not used to rabbits (wasn’t going to go there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) finally got one that said, “oh we do bunnies all the time, its no different in cost to a male cat, remember to feed them before and bring a snack for them to have after, etc etc” Needless to say, not bunny savvy but bunny experienced and saved a small fortune and had the dual benefit of relaxing knowing they had a good idea what they were doing.

I think I’m the one Beka was referring to – I live in the northeast (lived in CT when I got Otto) and things are very expensive here too. Otto’s neuter was $350, but came out to $400 after the blood work and pre-op exam. Considering that Hawaii is at least as expensive as where I live, that price seems normal.

I called a lot of places and the price was anywhere from $350 to over $500! So I called some clinics and the humane society and they set me up with a low cost spay/neuter place. This place dealt with rabbits all the time, as they were affiliated with the one rescue center that rescues bunnies, and they spay/neuter the rescues. So Molly’s surgery is less than $100. I did my homework, so I know this place is legit and trustworthy and they are rabbit savvy. See if any of the vets can recommend something like that for you.

Totally depends on where you live. I live in a rural area, everything is pretty cheap here – $95 for my boys neuter and $135 for my girls spay.

Location is everything. My girl’s spay was between $100-150. Rei has a good point though. Try to contact your local rabbit rescue. See who they use, and if you can get a similar price for your rabbit.

Paradise is expensive o_O Is there a humane society that will do it?

I live in Washington state and paid $135 for a spay. My bunny was kept at the vets for 2 days to recover.

They kept her for two days and it was only that much?!? Geeze. I was sent home without pain meds, a cone on her head, and a stern warning about how I was going to have to pay for it if I took the cone off and she did damage (I took the cone off, lol). Your vet sounds amazing!

Well, what I didn’t know was that the vet didn’t give her any pain meds, and kept here there to make sure that she was 100% before going home. Needless to say, that is not my vet anymore …

Ah well, I have mixed feelins about pain meds. If the rabbit is still eating, they don’t need them. You don’t want them feeling too good after a major surgery! Then they get into trouble. Having spayed dozens of cats, many of them ferals, I can see how the pain prevents them from basically killing themselves when they are kept trapped after surgery for recovery. They are not happy to be caged, but they hurt to much to do anything about it until they recover, and then you know you can let them go.

Wow, thanks for all the responses! It’s so useful to know what kind of range is out there. I’ll definitely call around a little bit, but it sounds like that’s probably going to be a pretty fair price for my area. I hadn’t thought of calling the humane society, that’s a great idea! I’ll see what they have to say. Thanks again, everyone!

A house rabbit is not a feral cat, they aren’t going to slam into their carrier or crate doors and flip around and hiss and spit and try to claw their way out. If they are confined properly, on pain meds, they can’t hurt themselves unless they chew on the incision. They are OBVIOUSLY in so much pain, I would hate to deny them the medication. My vet does keep it restricted to two days, which, after that my girl wanted to do binkies with no medication and I had to keep her confined to avoid her tearing anything, so he doesn’t like to give it too long due to he dislikes putting more chemicals in their bodies than needed, but he would never send a girl home without pain meds. And even on meds, my girl for the first two days just laid in one spot and didn’t move.

But, S&L, some human women don’t mind that lol my mother after two days at home after hers was climbing on top of the roof trying to fix a leak and we had to force her to come back down and go back to bed rest so she wouldn’t tear anything o.O

Haha she is, totally. She never wants to take her medicine, she refuses to stand still for ANY reason. One time she went to tap on the window to scare a frog off so she could walk by without it jumping on her (she’s scared of frogs ) and she hit it too hard and her hand went right through the window… bled so badly she soaked an entire towel and had a nasty gash up her arm, so what did she do? Wrapped another towel around her arm and went to work for 12 hours in a factory. *sigh* Getting her to take care of herself is hard. :p

Eep! Always always always pain meds. Always. It’s liek a full hysterectomy for a human woman. Would you put a human through that pain? If not, don’t do it for your pet. Keep them contained (aka bed rest) and you won’t have an issue.

After experiencing what my mom went through with her hysterectomy a few years back, I freaked out that the vet that did Chacha’s spay didn’t give pain meds. That is why he is no longer my vet.
