Well I made a post about how excited I was for the vet that I’d gotten a few months ago.  So when Layla turned 6 months old this week, I thought it was time I scheduled an appointment for her spay.  When I called the receptionist said “I don’t think he (the doctor) does female bunnies.”  Well I explained to her that he said he did and she said “Well, maybe but I’ve never seen him do that before.  We’ll schedule it anyway.”  Well of course I was a little uncomfortable by this, which was exasperated when she said the bunny would need to fast.  Not cool.

So I did some research and found another vet in town.  Erie has a check up with her tomorrow and I’m really hoping that this one is more forthright.  I did some research and have a list of questions I want to ask her but is there anything in particular anybody could interject?  I physically have a list this time cause I am basically incapable of remembering everything that needs to be asked.   I am hoping I can get a good vet in Erie but if tomorrow doesn’t work out I’m thinking I’ll have to drive about an hour and a half away.  Ok for me but I worry about Layla having to travel after the surgery.

Ah bunnies…  sometimes I find myself so dang worried about this furball!

when researching one time, i remember finding a list of questions to ask the vet before a spay. i think it was at http://www.rabbit.org (?) maybe some else knows?  i could use this list too as boston’s spay is coming up.

i’m the same way. i never remember the important things!

yup that site helped me get my ‘trick’ questions. I ask if they give oral penicillan to a bunny who has a bacterial infection. If yes, run! (injected penecillan is ok). I ask if they give pain meds and what they are, I ask ‘how long to fast’ them, not if, queing them to trip up…I think you did good running from that vet. It may be the receptionist being a dip and not knowing but that’s still not great.

I’m a big scaredy-cat, and got distracted by receptionists who were very nice, but who KNEW NOTHING! Make sure you talk to the vet. And know that YOU are the one that approves of THEM, and not vice-versa.

I think, after the operation, they are so zonked that an extra 30-miles makes no difference. They look miserable, it’s true, but they’ll look miserable in your car just as easily as in your living room….

Poor buns… If only vets weren’t so sneaky…

Layla had her vet appointment today and I asked her a whole list of questions (and she didn’t even looked annoyed. Actually, she looked pleased that I cared so much). She said there’s no fasting (score 1), that she doesn’t prescribe any antibiotic after the procedure for after care unless needed for signs of an infection (score 2) and that she doesn’t use outer stitches due to bunnies being able to pull them out sometimes (score 3). I guess they do something with glue, similar to how ADEE’s Abbie’s picture looked. She said that they start the bunny eating and have a sitter with them until they take their first bite after they “come to” (score 4) and that they let the bunny go home again as soon as bowels start moving again (score 5). Also, I asked to see where they keep the animals before and after surgery and it’s a nice big area so I won’t have to be worried about her being cooped up in a tiny pen all day (score 6).

I will be scheduling Layla’s spay very soon. There was an electrical outage all over town here today so Layla had her vet check up in the waiting room (one of the only rooms with a light that the generator kept on). I’m very impressed with this woman AND she’s actually closer to my home than the old vet. I have no idea how much it will cost due to their computers being down and them not being able to look up the cost, but I don’t even care. So long as my little girl is ok!

Layla is healthy and she is getting big! She’s 6 months old tomorrow and weighs 6 pounds.

Yup, sounds like a good vet to me.
