not eating very suddenly??

yesterday pumpkin was acting completely fine, doing binkys and all. this morning she ate her breakfast like she was starving (as she always does) and just 1 or 2 hours ago she was begging me for pellets. when i walked into my room a few minutes ago she was in her box all of a sudden (she only goes in there to nap in the middle of the day) and wont eat anything. i just had to force feed her some gas meds but i dont know what to do, this happened so suddenly? i had to make her come out of her box so i could give her the medicine and she kept grunting at me. could she just be annoyed that im bothering her while shes resting? its not like her at all to refuse food but i dont really offer it to her when shes resting so i dont know. she’s sitting in the corner of my room now with her eyes half shut. she’s shedding bad again and i’ve been trying to get as much hair off her as i can, but it’s very hard to get her to stay still to be groomed so sometimes i give up. 2 days ago i gave her one mint leaf for the first time, could that be causing this? is there anything else i can do to help her, her vet is so expensive and also far away. she keeps laying down then getting up, could that mean belly pain? i started rubbing her belly while she was sitting there and then she layed down on my hand, so maybe that felt good to her? but then after about 30 seconds she got up and ran away.

 

edit- i just remembered that i gave her broccoli in her salad last night. i only give it to her 2x a week (mondays and thursdays) and only a tiny bit, no more than a tablespoon? she always seems to do fine with it but the last time she got gi stasis i had given her broccoli the night before and we still dont know what caused the gi stasis. she was also shedding during that time too.

i also just got new plants yesterday, one is a coleus which im not sure if its toxic to rabbits but i always make sure my plants are completely out of reach to pumpkin and she can never eat any fallen leaves. could being in the same room as the plant affect her? maybe it has a smell or something?

sorry i keep adding onto this, but i just called her vet and she cant be seen until the end of september and they dont have exotic emergency vets. this is the only vet i know of anywhere near me that sees rabbits and knows what theyre doing.

last update i promise 😭, she’s acting completely fine now and eating!!! the gas meds helped a lot. hopefully she stays like this and doesnt get sick again. i think it was from how bad she’s been shedding.

No need to delete your post — I’m glad she’s eating!

Rabbits for what can seem like no reason can have smaller bouts of gas (just like humans) that can be self-resolving. If it’s been less than 3 hours since the rabbit was last eating/pooping, you can be on “alert” and treat test, as well as do at-home measures like encouraging movement and giving simethicone. When you start approach 8-12hrs without eating/pooping, that is an ER vet situation.

You might want to stop giving your bunny broccoli. According to a few rabbit sites I’ve read that broccoli is one of the few veggies that give bunnies indigestion and gas pain. Other websites say it’s perfectly safe so definitely not your fault. Your bunny might be sensitive to it at certain times. In this case I just think the broccoli might be what’s triggering the gas especially since last time your bun had an gi episode you happened to her broccoli then too.

the last time she got stasis she was shedding badly and had also gotten broccoli the night before so im wondering if maybe it could’ve been caused by both things. i probably wont be giving her broccoli anymore just to be on the safe side, but i definitely wont be giving her anything that can cause gas while she’s shedding.

Glad she is doing better! It does sound like a gas attack that may have been brought on by the broccoli, the molting, or the combo of the two! Broccoli and other members of the cabbage family can cause gas in buns, so best to avoid them if you are having suspicious gas issues.
