        Hi everyone,

I’ve been babysitting my roomie’s rabbit for 2 days and I noticed that he doesn’t like eating hay much. He hasn’t touched it at all. I called her and asked about it. She said that he doesn’t really like to eat hay much. I’ve tried giving him some oxbow orchard grass hay, but he doesn’t like it either. How do I get him to eat hay? (I don’t give him that much pellets, either.)

It is important to get him to eat the hay. Possibly he fills up on pellets too much, how much does he get? Or, maybe he doesn’t like this type of hay, or it isn’t fresh. I would reduce pellets, freshen up his hay rack often and mix in some favorite veggie shreds with the hay. I would also consider taking him to the vet to have his teeth checked if he keeps refusing to eat hay.

You could also offer him a variety of different hay, such as Timothy, Oat, Orchard, even “Mountain Grass” hay. Just to tempt him.

I fed him about 1.5 tablespoons of his pellets. I’m not sure how much my roommate usually feeds him. I checked on him earlier and he only ate a tiny bit of the orchard grass. My roommate mentioned that the vet told her that his teeth didn’t look very good and might need to be sanded down later. I don’t think he likes chewing on wood or anything either.

that’s the reason then, overgrown teeth make chewing hay hard to impossible. Make sure he gets to the vet soon for the dental trim.

I’ll let her know so she can take him in for his trim. Thanks Petzy and Arson!
