I took ChaCha to the vet, and the vet ruled out ear mites completely. He took her into the back of the vet place and inspected her ears with a scope (?) and he came back and told me the verdict.

She has a ruptured ear drum

It is just one of the ears, her left. It is just inflammation, and I got her in fast that it did not get worse.

The doctor said that ruptured ear drums in rabbits are VERY VERY rare, and seen more often in cats.

I am not sure if my little one is deaf in her ear, since the ear drum did rupture

Anyways, she is okay, my boyfriend let her out of her carrier and she was given a treat by him.

ChaCha is on Benebac to create good bacteria in her body, and also Enrofloxacillin 0.5 cc twice a day for the inflammation. The Enrofloxacillin is pink liquid that I have to put into her mouth  The vet had showed me how to do it. ChaCha hates being picked up. She will have to be a good bunny and cooperate with me for 10 days. Oh, and the Benebac is for a month.

She will be seen again by the vet for another check up in July.

Is ruptured ear drums that uncommon among bunnies?

Poor Chacha – did he have any ideas as to how that could happen?

Enroflaxacin is the same as Baytril. Does she seem in pain?

          Vibes to Chacha.

He does not.. it makes me wonder if she is deaf.
            She isn’t in any pain.

I let her out to roam the living room since I am off today, my boyfriend and I were watching over her. She was running around and doing binkies galore! She went into her cotton tail cottage and flopped on her side.

I’m in the living room with her, hanging out with my bf. I’m happy that he doesn’t mind hanging out with her. I’m going to monitor her for the night and give her the next dose of the pink stuff (baytril) later tonight.

My vet told me that some bunnies like the taste of baytril. it reminded me of bubble gum flavored medicine, lol.

I am glad ChaCha is feeling well though. You should be able to determine if she is deaf. Does she radar her ears around when there are new noises?

                Like periscope?
She either does that, or runs away into her favorite maze haven.

I read online about the ear drum, and there were cases that it has been much worse than what my bunny has. Other stuff got infected.. Its so scary

I am going to look into getting her VPI pet insurance. I will need to sort my bills out in July and see how much it is.

                    Yeah, she does.
My dad ordered pizza tonight and when she heard my dad talking to the pizza delivery lady, she was curious.

Does baytril have any side effects?

I administered her 2nd dose for the day and she did well. She actually sucked the liquid from the syringe o_O;; She nibbled on my finger a little too.

She has been laying down all stretched out tonight. She must be tired

                          Poor little bunny!

I think certain ear infections can rupture the ear drum. Did he check for bacteria in her ears?

Bindi was on Baytril once for an ear infection. The only side effect it caused was it affected his appetite. He hardly ate any hay and lost a couple of ounces but he gained them back soon after we stopped the drug. Just keep an eye to make sure she is still eating her usual amount.

                            Glad Chacha is feeling better!!

I know many people who’ve ruptured ear drums SCUBA diving and they did heal again. My parent’s dog Mandy ruptured both of hers, either from radiation or from subsequent ear infections-she cannto hear but my vet is uncertain as to whether that would be the cause of it. So I think in short, I think there’s a good chance it will heal-and that your bunny will hear. And hearing loss in one ear only prevents localizing sounds-which rabbits are extremely good at with their big ears (They are designed for localizing in the azimuth as well)-so even loss in one ear won’t leave her with much of a handicap-but I think-likely-her hearing may return.

With it ruptured though-since the ear drum, or tympanic membrane is the key to hearing-it oscillates and sets the tiny bones vibrating -likely she can’t hear out of that ear-but ruptured ear drums usually heal

seconding what K&K said- ruptured ear drums can heal as long as the inciting cause is taken care of- infection, trauma, etc.

                                Thank you all

It is still a mystery as to how she got it..

Her ears still perk up when I move around or when she hears something.

She is doing quite well- she isn’t in any pain. She was jumping on the couch and digging and smoothing out my blanket, dragging her veggies off her plate and hiding to eat it.. the usual chacha diva stuff.

Again, thank you all for your support!!
I will update as the days go by.

Off topic, but I just LOVE your avatar! You probably posted a larger pix of that before, but her feet are hysterical!

ChaCha only shook her head partially last night, about 2 times. Otherwise, she was doing binkies galore again – flopping down lots and feeling fine.

RabbitPam – Thank you I thought it was hilarous how she ‘put up her feet.’ LOL

LOL, it seems that Monkeybun knows the HOOMINrazzi is nearby

My bun is still shaking her head a little bit.. but not as much. I do hope the inflammation does go away.
