ooooTracy, I LOVE Manatees! Great pix – no I haven’t heard of that park. I’m in Palm Beach County. (Atlantic coast)
The boardwalk circles the wetlands which is watered by the water utility next to it. The gator was behind a railing that runs around the whole boardwalk. (See heron picture.) They are usually sunning on these man-made islands in the middle of the pond, but where that one was I had seen a mama and baby gators on the ground about a year ago. It may have been a baby that stayed on that end of the trail. It would have to try hard to get through the fence, but it’s possible.
No, it is doubtful that it got the bunnies. The hawks scared them (bunnies) off to safer grounds I’m sure. I’ve seen a sunning gator with a heron standing on its head. The groundskeepers make sure they are fed to minimize the danger. Hippos are MUCH more dangerous! I think the gators and turtles look like ancient creatures that managed to survive.
Around here there’s a report in the news about someone with a gator in their back yard about twice a year. Of course, when I lived in the Berkshires in MA, it was baby bears in trees. Frankly, gators are not cute. Guinea Hen babies are. Their beaks are bright red.
