So Fiver’s pre-sore hock condition seemed to be doing better, until the last few nights.

I’ve been really careful not to put too much soap in his wash, kept his area nice and clean, don’t feed him things I suspect may cause his eliminations to be more caustic for his feet as he sits in the litter pan, put Carefresh in to help absorb stuff, and on and on….

I was able to stop putting Neosporin on his feet. I finaly tossed the pad guard, it was becoming the consistency of molasses and has all the charm of a bottle of superglue. I just can’t manage it and I don’t think it’s good for bunnies.

The other night, while he was out doing binkies, I saw the heels had become inflamed again and one looked broken. (?) So I had my son help me put Neosporin on the heels. Fiver is doing a little better with our ‘catch & release’ system…I get hold of him and my boy puts the medicine on.

Last night, it was my daughter’s turn. As she’s medicating the left rear hock, she tells me she can see the fur coming away from the longer part of the foot (heading towards the toes) in an almost ‘part’ fashion. The skin underneath is very pink. We tried taking pix with the FLIP cam, but she’s not proficient with it and the pix came out totally blurry. You can’t tell if any of the exposed skin is broken or not.

I know I’m going to have to get him to the vet soon, they all need trims and I am probably going to let my vet have it with both barrels unless she gets me some Silvadene. In the meantime, anything else I should be doing?

Also, it’s terribly hot in the house now, the hubby won’t allow the temp to be set under 75. I do my best to keep the bunnies cool (ice bottles, fanned air, no lights, etc.) but we’re all suffering.

Could the fur just be coming away due to the heat? Should I change his bedding to something less fluffy? (to what I don’t know, he’ll chew fabric, so that’s out) They’ve all three finished blowing their coats, so I can’t imagine why his foot fur would be thinning unless it’s more sore hock or an infection or something.

        I’m really worried about him.

EDIT: Sorry about how the post title came out, it was supposed to say “Not again, Fiver…*more foot trouble* ” and I screwed up by adding a little sad face, which buggered the whole thing. If an admin would adjust it for me, please? Thank you.

i’m sorry you’re having more issues with his feetsies. it’s one of the “joys” of mini rex slavery… does your vet not carry silvadene? can you call in advance when you make the appt and request that they get some for you?

does he seem very bothered by it? i wonder if it’s possible that it looks worse than it is? someone, don’t remember who, recently recommended applying ointment right before pellet or salad time, that way they are more occupied eating than licking off the cream…

If your vet does not carry Silvadene they should be able to write a prescription for you to pick it up at any human pharmacy.

Thanks everybun! ^_^ No, Beka, he is probably not as bothered by it as I am, but I think his binky energy might be down a bit. He’ll buzz around for a few passes but for the most part just lays down and sticks his back feet into a position that the heel sticks straight up and back, do you know what I mean? Rests on his toes more than his whole foot. Every once in awhile he stretch them straight out backwards, but he has to be VERY relaxed for that to happen.

Katnip I didn’t realize it was available at a regular pharmacy! Thanks for that, I’ll get it from her one way or another then! ^_^
