› FORUM › DIET & CARE › Nora Irritating Incision Area? (PHOTO)
Here’s a photo of Noras incision – for those of you who didn’t see the other post she was spayed on Wednesday night – it kind of looks to me like she is gnawing at the incision. I believe she pulled out a stitch but she incision was glued after being stitched so I think it’s still holding together. There is no gaping hole or anything so she hasn’t actually yanked the incision back open as far as I can tell.

She does keep messing with the area though? Any ideas on how to get her to stop? I really haven’t been able to tell if shes licking or chewing but from the photo it almost looks like she’s chewing on the area. I’m kind of refusing to put a cone on her head. I haven’t tried to get one or anything simply because when we put them on the Tans after their speuters they went insane. I thought they were going to break something because they kept trying to run and tripping over it and literally flipping themselves over. We had to corner them and hold them down to get them off so they would stop freaking out. So I’m trying to avoid using those.
Ideas? Opinions? As usual, I’m welcoming any comments or suggestions.
Awww poor Nora ): If you have any cotton gauze I would wrap that around the incision (not too tightly but make sure it wont slip off) and it wont harm her if she chews on it. But if that fails I personally would call your vet and see if their were any alternatives to the cone. Hope she feels better!
Poor little girl. I would e-mail this photo to your vet. It does look to me like she’s been messing with it.
Bunnies do hate the cones but sometimes it’s the only option to let incisions heal.
Ah, this is where the complications set in of having a foster rescue bunny… LOL.
She’s not a patient of my vet so I’m not able to e-mail her Noras photo. I txted the rescue this same photo. They are going to give me a collar for her, some Flagyl pills to crush up and coat some Neosporin with the pill crushings to keep her away from the incision area.
The photo was from last night – checked the incision a few minutes ago – and it’s about the same. I only really have Sidneys spay to compare it to. Whereas Sidney never messed with the area but was hard to get to eat and out of depression – Nora isn’t depressed at all, came home and gobbled up food but for the life of me wont’ stop messing with the area! LOL.
She seems like a trooper. I’m sure she will make out fine with the collar. When Bindi needed an e-collar, I took it off for several supervised hours a day and put a piece of vet wrap loosely around the area he was picking at (which was on his side). It’s good to take the collar off for a while to let bunny wash and have a break from it.
So we had to do the collar – she tore out all the stitches and basically the 2nd layer of glue is holding her together… LOL. Which is fine they said it should definitely still hold unless she keeps messing with it. The rescue gave me a Flagyl pill to crush up in some Neosporin and a collar. Of course, the Flagyl is supposed to be a HUGE deterrent for rabbits licking or chewing. Well…. I put the mixture on Nora and what does she do? She goes CRAZY, aggressively yanking at her incision and trying to get the Neosporin off. I just about had a heart attack with her yanking and pulling so hard. I literally tackled her to the ground to get the damn collar over her so she would stop! And boy was she not a very happy bunny…. I took some ADORABLE pictures of her though with her collar on!
hahahahaa.

Sigh – checked her incision an hour or so ago…..
Not looking as good as before. Seems we are off to the vet again…
That looks pretty nasty. Did she do this before you put the collar on her?
For pet rats they use a nylon and make almost like a body bandage it seems to work. There’s also a post -op bandage using anchor tape idea for rats which would also work for bunnies I think

Aww, I was really hoping after all your recent bun stuff this would be easy for you!
Is the cone flexible? I need to get one of those the ones they always give me are harder plastic :/
I’m sorry her wound isn’t looking very good. (( Vibes for Nora ))
Took her to a very awesome vet today – my first time seeing him but he was great with her! And me!
He said to put Neosporin on it twice a day and only let her roam around on bedding for a day or two. Or anything soft and fluffy like a towel. Thankfully she didn’t cause an infection but he said much more of that and she would have needed new stitches and antibiotics. Brat girl.
The collar has been working well though – you could tell today it looked better and was becoming more of a scab rather than her making a hole in her stomach. UGH. LPT – she did it all that before putting the collar on her. It’s flexible, MD. It works well and it’s very small. The ones we had for the Tans were bigger and they kept falling on them so we took them off. They were literally freaking themselves out so bad with them. But they weren’t messing with their incisions either so they were okay with them off! Nora is doing fine with it on though. LPT, also… I was going to take it off her but she literally messes with the incision EVERY chance she gets. So I’m worried to take it off and have her mess with the scab right now as she was so on the verge of needing to be re-sutured.
MD – I know! I can’t get a break with these rascals I swear!
Glad you made out well with the vet.
Best to leave the cone on for a couple of days then, if she’s being super obsessed with it. Stormy was the same way after he was neutered.
She has been functioning pretty well with it on. Some major growling on her part whenever you mess with it on her… but she still eats fine, hops around fine when she’s outside. I just feel bad she can’t clean herself. Every time she grooms she really is grooming the e-collar and I wonder if she knows… LOL .
Poor baby girl.
I’m glad Nora is acting a little bit better. Poor girl. (((Vibes))) that she calms down and leaves it alone.
Her incision is looking even better today! Looks like the e-collar has been helping and she hasn’t been messing with it!
She’s out in the x pen right now playing. Full of energy! Haha, I think she is doing well now!
Noras e-collar is off today! Her scab fell off and she’s definitely pretty healed.
Yay for my girl and her successful spay!!
Well done to Nora! She’s a beautiful girl, best wishes to her ![]()
Glad to hear it! ![]()
