Did you get tested for this? Are you certain it’s not seasonal allergies?

As a lifelong allergy sufferer, I would try to see an allergy doctor (not just your regular doctor). They’ll be able to test you and find out exactly what bothers you as well as prescribing the best medicine for you.

They can also offer allergy shots. Now, every time I bring these up, people are very very anti-shots and always shoot me down, but you should really consider it if your allergies are that bad and the doctor recommends them! Nothing else has ever helped get rid of my allergies the way shots have. I’m currently medicine free even and have zero symptoms, just from getting the shots.

So talk to a doctor and see what they recommend. There’s a lot they can do these days that’s better than just taking over the counter stuff and hoping it works.

i havent gotten tested but were booking an appiontmant.. and i know for sure because my mom.. love her but she is crule sometimes… made me sniff hershey.. and i immediatly started sneezing… and i dont mind needles. all i do is sneeze and get a stuffed nose (aslong as nothing touches my face) but im just scared they might get worse espessially with me working at a pet store where they sell cats, guinny pigs, bunnies…plus owning 2 cats a bunny, and at my dads a cat and a dog + we take the bunny
(people will come and drop litters off rater than takeing them to the shelter. the store pays to get them fixed and shots ect. then sell them strictly for how much the vet bills cost)

Elrohwen, I have always heard and seen great results from allergy shots, so I don’t know anyone who objects to them. You are another example of their positive effectivness.

MirBear, allergies happen in a sort of threshold way. You may be mildly allergic to your bunny, plus have a food allergy that you ate one day, plus a dust allergy on a day when the wind blew up lots of dry dust in the air, then WHAM! They produce a severe reaction in combination. So an allergist can test you for all kinds of things to help you determine the problem.

Because it’s just as possible that you are allergic to the hay or litter as much as the bunny, so sniffing isn’t a definitive test. And it could be the cat and or dog combined, with their dander and fur in the house getting on the bunny too. So be sure to be tested (they do scratch tests, very small patches) for each animal you have, plus the hays and grasses and foods if you can as well. Once you know, you will really only need shots for the specific types you are allergic to.

Allergies come on as you get older, and some can hit you in your 30s or later (perfumes for me). But you can also be helped with shots and develop a resistance to them.
Go get tested soon, and good luck.

Pam, not saying that BBers are against them, but I’ve recommended them to lots of people in my life and almost without fail they tell me they would never ever consider it ??? I just don’t understand the attitude people have towards them. I guess getting a shot is scarier than taking a pill, though pills have a lot of medicines, while the shots are just diluted allergins – not a medicine at all. I keep trudging on with recommending them though in case anyone ever says “That’s the best advice ever!” Lol

They’ve been proven extremely effective, I just wish they weren’t such a pain to get (they do require weekly doctor’s visits for a while until you reach a “maintenance dose”)

Shots ARE scary! But I agree, they do work. I had severe environmental allergies when I was little and did the shots for a while and I did notice a difference. We had to stop b.c it took two nurses to hold me down, lol. I probably need to get retested and go back on them.

It’s good you’re going to see an allergist, that way they can tell you exactly what to do to manage your allergies. Don’t worry, you’ll be able to have pets and such as long as you work w your doctor. My friend’s dad is a doctor and deals a lot with people with allergies, she says (though I’ve never tried it) that as an alternative to shots, they can make this serum with what ever it is that prevents your body from reacting to the allergens and you put a drop or two under your tongue daily. Supposedly it works really well, though idk – this is all just from what I heard from my friend.

Barbie, would it freak you out if I told you that I gave the shots to myself for years? Haha  I loved it because I didn’t have to waste time at the doctor every week.

I’m pretty sure they don’t let you do that anymore

Currently I’m getting 3 shots a week! (all at once) I really don’t mind the shot part, but I’m at a high concentration so they are kind of sore for a day or so afterwards which is annoying.

eta: I’ve also heard about those drops! The serum is really exactly the same as the stuff in the shots (more or less) but instead of injecting you just ingest it. I keep hearing about it, but I have yet to find an allergist who offers it  Definitely something to ask about!

Awww I’m sorry Mirbear I’ve no experience but I’ve heard it’s a lot to suffer through *hugs* I think like the others suggesting-seeing an allergist would be a good idea

Elrohwen, yes that DOES freak me out! Yikes! When I was in lower school, I had a friend who had to give herself growth hormone shots daily… I guess it’s no different from a diabetic having to do insulin shots but… eeeek I’m glad yuu can stand it! I know the shots do help.

Mirbear, I wanted to add that I know what you’re going through, I’m allergic to Leroy and I know how miserable allergies can make you. ((Hugs!)))

I am allergic to every animal but my rabbit! It could be the hay that is also making your allergies worse. I will tell you right now, that timothy hay is the worst thing ever for allergies and sinus infections. I am a huge fan of benedryl. As far as touching your face, that’s exactly how my allergic reactions happen with cats. Hand sanitizer. If holding the bunny, try putting a blanket or towel over you, that you can throw in the wash, that keeps the fur off you mostly, you know? Don’t touch your face of nuzzle the bunny with your face. The shots would be the best thing for him.

One thing though, I don’t know you and I am proud of you! This happens to so many people that they find out that they’re allergic and get rid of their animals. That’s how I got Sophie. Her mom was abandoned in an apartment, the tenant moved out and didn’t take their two bunnies. Soon thereafter, a litter was born and my best friend was fostering the mom and dad. I fell madly in love with Sophie before her eyes even opened because of how hard she fought to stay alive. Good for you! A life without animals would be pretty depressing, wouldn’t it?!?

I don’t know if I could do it every day! At least with allergy shots, you can work up to once per month.
