Non-Paper Dig Box

Hello all!

I know this has been discussed before but all of them seem to drop off without any real conclusion, so hopefully this one won’t drop off too!

Pascal loves to dig and hunt for treats in a dig box that I have filled with shredded paper, but he keeps using it as a litter box which is annoying.  So I was thinking of possibly filling it with something else. I want to make a dig box with grass in it because Pascal LOVES grass, but I have a black thumb and know that it would either not grow at all, or die within a week. My other idea was maybe filling his dig box with pea gravel, it wouldn’t be as small as sand so he can’t get it in his eyes/nose but it also would be just as fun, and nice and cool! I already have some and was planning on baking it to kill any bacteria on it, and then letting it cool before putting it in the box. 

I’m mainly looking for anyone’s opinions on how safe this would be? I can post a pic of the pea gravel tonight just to show the size of it, since there are so many different types.

I’m not sure how safe pea gravel is but another alternative is sisal rope. I took one of the extra grids from building our cage and wove sisal rope through it. I left some of the ends long so the bunnies can tug at them. They both love this. Another idea that I saw online somewhere, might have even been this website, was to take strips of card board and wedge them in tightly to another box with the cut ends facing up. You can buy these types of cat scratching toys at places like target but they are fairly pricey for what they are and often have catnip in them.

My rabbits didn’t use the cat cardboard scratch boxes. They dig in gravel outside, and I have given them cat litter boxes with play sand, but I also like the sisal rope idea. It’s easy, cheap, and portable. I want to try it tomorrow 🙂

I am planning on making some rag rugs since both buns like to dig at the fabric pads in their cages and they seem really easy to make too! I just need to find the time is all. I’ll make a small dig box with pea gravel and see how it pans out. I was also thinking that I could use natural aquarium gravel (not the painted and oddly colored stuff). Either way I will be sure to boil or bake whatever I choose so that there isn’t any bacteria on it.

I just took one of the nic panels and weaved sisal rope through it after reading about that idea here. Took a good long time, but it is solid. I cut some 6-inch pieces and weaved them through the back with the ends sticking up. We’ll see if the bunnies like it 🙂

You could fill a box with hay and have that as a dig box. I fill small boxes with hay and put dried fruit in them. My rabbits love searching through the hay for treats.

Guin had fun in her hay box last night. I put about 4 times the hay I normally put in her litter box. She dug down, moved the wood pellets aside, nibbled on the puppy pee pad, and then tunneled through the hay, tossing it up in the air. It was cute. I’ve thought about hiding snacks in the hay, but hay = litter box = pee.

Little gift boxes if the box is bigger maybe? Those Chinese takeout style folding boxes from dollar store? Roll safe paper into loops/braided ropes.. hmm. Toilet paper tube all cut differently.
