My bunny sleeps in my room and that is literally the only place for her in the apartment.  She is great but she makes sooo much noise in the morning and she’s been keeping me awake.  I know this is her natural instinct to be active at dawn but I’ve been losing hours of sleep which hasn’t been good.  I know there’s nothing I can do but I thought I’d ask anyways if there is ANY sort of solution to this problem.  Thanks!

So what kind of noise does your bunny make in the morning. What is she up to?

I don’t have any great advice, but I used to have a similar problem. I will tell you the story even though I doubt it is relevent.
My bunny would start biting on the bars of his cage making Quite the racket every morning. It drove me absolutely nuts! I found myself yelling “WHY!!!! Bunny WHY must you torture me!! Please just STOP!!”

Turns out all he wanted was for me to come let him out so he could snuggle with me. So I would have to go get him and snuggle or he wouldn’t stop. I realize giving him what he wanted was reinforcing the behavior.. but he was relentless. I tried a squirt bottle but all it did was get him soggy then I would feel bad.

Alas, I have since moved his cage right next to my bed and I have not had that problem since. He is quite happy to stay in his cage in the morning and be fairly quiet. He never bites the bars anymore. Plus it is no hassle to let him out now since I don’t have to get out of bed to do it.

I do understand how crazy it can make you to be woken up by a loud bunny everymorning! So I feel for ya.

Haha well that’s a good story! I doubt mine wants to cuddle though. She’s just hopping all around here cage, rearranging everything in there, eating hay, etc. You name it she does it. She’s so sweet so I can’t get mad at her but geeze.

this is actually very common. due to rabbits being “crepuscular” they are awake in the late evening and early morning hours.

we had a thread about this recently… https://binkybunny.com/FORUM/tabid/54/forumid/3/postid/87617/view/topic/Default.aspx

A bunny that wants to snuggle is a great treat. The only person that Mr. Puddles will cuddle with is my hubby. And thats even rare. HE calls it the Puddle Cuddle.

Coco used to be quite the cage noise maker. Like throw all her litter out of the bars – chewing, thumping etc.

At first I tried the “Blanket over the cage to make her believe it was dark” thing and it worked for a little while.

But when she resumed, we went free range. She wants to be where she wants to be. She was sleeping next to me on the rug next to the bed…and that has become IN the bed and now she wakes me by THOROUGHLY licking my feet in the morning.

My favorite is Sophie throwing her ceramic food dish from the second floor of her bunny condo (i refuse to ever use the word cage!) down to the ground floor. Really, there’s nothing you can do except find a new place for bunny’s house. this is Sophie’s busiest time of day, honestly. 4:30 a.m. is her wake up call, I know it.

Boy, they can be relentless, especially once they realize that it WILL get you up. Eventually.

My princess Pringles has a 4 floor condo (I don’t say c-a-g-e either) and I thought it was cute to give her some baby toys to throw around. The big hollow ball with the little balls and jingles inside, that kind of lunacy.

For a few days it would startle me to hear that thing being thrown out of the condo in the wee hours, but at least it was only once.

Then Pringles realized how much MORE fun it would be to carry it to the top of the condo and throw it from level to level, and do that over and over. 2 of the floors have rugs so it’s just a dull thunk, rattle, rattle, jingle, jingle. But the 2 levels with wooden floors make a big racket.

It’s never been unusual to find everything not nailed down thrown out of the condo. Especially the morning after an evening they were not able to get out and run wild around the house for their usual exercise. Occasionally they will tell me just how much they hate a new veggie and throw it out too.

                      sneaky bunnies   😉

Ah! They are so cute yet so evil! Pietro is quite the active one in the wee hours. But there isn’t another room to put him in. The past few nights Ive let him just be out int room so he can sleep wherever since its been so cold. He wasted no time taking advantage of that! Running laps under my bed, jumping INTO bed with me and padding allover my legs! So cute though! So I would say either let her out all night and shes less likely to make so much noise since she isn’t confined (although the downside to this is putting her back in when you leave for the day will probably make her mad like it does mine) or if your room is large enough, get a fence and put it up around the cage so she has SOME free range (this is genrally what we do with Pietro otherwise he’d be chewing on the cage and stomping etc etc etc) Good luck!

Thanks! Maybe I’ll try just letting her out. She’s still a crazy woman at 6:41 AM on the dot every morning. She’s so sweet though…I just can’t be mad at her. Give me a few more weeks though.

What worked for me with Kokanee (she felt the need to renovate and bang bars very early in the morning) was to keep her awake during the day, with the TV on or a radio and lights too, and then make it very dark at bed time. We do a similar thing with my buns now and everybody is pretty well asleep or mostly quiet during the night. Theydo adjust quickly to your schedule if you keep them awake when your awake
