About 2 weeks ago, bowtie was happily hopping around on the carpet and then she started running in circles really fast while doing binkies. but then she suddenly stopped and hopped into the other room. I went to investigate. She tore off her thumb nail on her front paw. There was a bit of blood. I cleaned her up and have been watching her carefully for infection, kept her litterbox super clean, etc. And theres been no change of behavior. But when I looked at her paw today, theres still no nail, and I can’t even find the numb that the nail used to be on. What does this mean?! Did I premanently deform my poor bunny??

It takes a while for a nail broken at the base to grow back. The thumbnails grow very slowly anyway. You should start seeing a nail grow back within 1-2 months. And even if it doesn’t grow back for some reason, one nail isn’t a huge loss for a bunny, and she probably won’t even notice it’s missing.

I doubt it is completely gone- it can just take awhile to grow back.  Even with a declawed cat- where the end of the toe is amputated- if you do not get all of the digit- deformed nails can regrow.  But the point is it does take a lot to completely damage and remove and nail and the nail bed to the point where it will not regrow.

And even if it does not- that is just one less nail to trim and you will probably be the only one to ever notice!

Takes a while Just watch for infection, and like Katnip said-it’s no hardship if it doesn’t come back

One of my bunnies Ivy doesnt have either of his two thumb toe nails. One was gone already when I got him and there is no nail at all. If I didnt know that there was supposed to be a nail I wouldnt even notice that digit. The other toe nail he snagged on the edge of his cage the first night I got him. His nails were very long but I didnt want to stress him with a nail cut the first night– guess I should have!! That nail is growing back very very slowly. Not sure that it will ever be quite normal but we will see. As long as the bleeding has stopped and it doesnt look infected I am sure that it will be fine! Hope that shes feeling better!
