i had to call in sick from work today because my boyfriend’s bunny Ninja got his hind paw caught on something last night .we knew something was up because he was hopping different and he left a trail of blood.we checked him out and one of his toe was cut open.its like his claw was separated from the rest of his toe.it bled for a while but we managed to make it stop.we covered his paw with a little sock so it wont get infected.my boyfriend was freakin out and im just tryin to calm him down til we get him to the vet.

right when we woke up,we called the vet but she was booked.we begged her and she just squeezed us in at around 4pm.

we just got back from the vet and vet said he will be fine.they shaved his paw and they found out that the cut went all the way through his whole toe.they cleaned it up and all.vet said he doesnt need any stitching since it will heal on its own just fine.i swear when they showed me the shaved paw,i freaked out because i thought his skin came off. i have never seen a bunny skin like that.so many veins.

so..the vet gave us Tribrissem.he’s supposed to take 0.27 mls by mouth twice daily.all i know is that its an antibiotic.vet said that it should work better than Baytril because most bacterias are resistant to Baytril now since its overused. she kinda makes sense but is there any truth to that??

        he’s acting fine now.hopping okay.

is it okay if he licks his wound or should i cover it up with a bandage or something similar?i have this lil sock that’s meant for babies and i gave it to him before we went to sleep last night.should i put it back?

also,im worried that whenever he goes to his litterbox, the wound will get dirty.should i take his litter box off until he heals?

my boyfriend keeps on checking up on him.he felt so bad that that happened to his lil baby.

Poor bub! Antibiotics should keep any nasties at bay. If me, I’d be inclined to put the sock on too…Did the vet see the sock and say anything?Maybe cut holes for the other nails to go thru? As long as that wouldn’t cause injury to the other nails that is!
Maybe wrap his foot with some light gauze.

If you decide not to cover it, just keep putting new litter over the soiled in his box.  He might groom the hock himself and keep it clean without worrying the wound hopefully.

That med is sometimes called Bactrim and it’s pretty common too. I personally think what the vet said is true about any antibiotics and overuse (including human ones).

oh.i never knew Bactrim is the same as Tribrissem.
i decided on not to put a sock on his paw.boyfriend agreed to clean his pen and litterbox more often until Ninja’s wound heals.

I would go by what the vet said to do. Sometimes covering a wound prevents it from healing quickly with the air circulating around it, and if the litter pan were a problem she would know that and have said something. (I hope.) Always keep a site and the environment clean if you can, so more frequent changes will definitely help. I’m sure you can call or email the vet with a couple of questions though. That’s easy for her to get a message back to you so you’ll know for sure. I love the sock idea for the time before taking him in.

How scary to go through- your bf and Ninja are lucky that you stayed calm and did all the right things. I think the guys can get more upset when stuff happens than we do! And I would imagine that getting their nails caught is fairly common for bunnies- I get really worried about mine when their nails get too long, because of that.

I’m glad he’s doing well- sounds like he’s gonna be fine

my boyfriend was already frantic and i know that he needed me to calm him down.

Ninja’s okay now.his cut bled a little bit last night because he kept licking it.it was such a scare but im glad its all okay now.
