How terribly sad.
I also read it yesterday. Since he got checked it was probably something to do with eating or drinking, poor guy.
Not defending the airline, but an apparently healthy bunny is not always that.
Also that is a huge flight for any animal to undertake, especially a rabbit, seeing as rabbits are known to simply die from stress (often from going into shock), it’s why traveling with them is such a big deal, and why most people do not always chose to bring their rabbit with them if they are moving overseas.
i also read this so sad the poor bunny

Yep, agreeing. Also, I wonder how used was the bun to traveling (even by car, train, etc…).
Also… WHY making him travel in the cargo area???? That’s so moronic! Mine would die of fear even before being loaded in there…
That’s scary. I read that story a day after returning via United – with my bunny in the cabin with me! I use the pet safe program with United when I ship birds, and I have also used Delta to ship birds. But I don’t think I could get myself to put a rabbit in cargo. Especially if the rabbit was not used to traveling. Lancelot is very used to traveling, and doesn’t get stressed over it. But who knows what this poor giant bunny was used to or not. It’s very sad and scary.
I suppose the bunny traveled in cargo because it was taking an unaccompanied flight. When I booked Lancelot with United, they said that cabin pets have to be accompanied, since they go under a seat. That could be another reason the bunny didn’t go in cabin. The largest carrier they can be in – is 18″x11″x11″. And they have to go under a seat and remain there. That poor bunny wouldn’t have fit in the cabin according to United’s regulations. I’d be interested to hear if they did an autopsy and what the results were.
My biggest concern with flying cargo – is the animal being bounced around by turbulence. When I ship birds, I get a foam exercise mat, cut it to size, and attach it to the inside of the walls, roof, and floor of the carrier. They say the animal must be able to stand up and turn around in the carrier, but I feel that gives them too much room to be tossed around. Even in the cabin – I took a rolled up baby blanket and had Lancelot propped up on all sides, so he wouldn’t hit anything in turbulence.
Some animals can’t handle stress, and rabbits are more prone to stress related death than most other pets, even those totally chill Giants, so I’m not sure this was truly 100% the airlines fault. This is one of a few reasons why I’m going to find my dog a new home before I fly back to the States this year, as I don’t think she could handle the stress of a 10+ hour (plus multiple layovers) flight in cargo.
I can guarantee you that we would NOT even be hearing about this if it hadn’t been for that guy getting kicked off the United flight a few weeks ago.
The news media is such a sad and predictable creature. Someone at United can loose a passengers golf clubs at this point and it will be front page news.

True, but I think the poor bunny should still be front page news
.
Oh no poor Simon and he was the son of Darius!!! Everybody knows Darius he’s had big media coverage in UK (his breeder is an ex ‘model’) poor bunny… Do you know, he doesn’t look that happy in that photo of him. his third eyelid is way up and it’s only a photo…..
I suppose if there is any good to come out of this, it will be that animal controls and care inflight should improve.
I would transport a cat or a dog by plane if i were moving far (sedative pills… zzzzzzzz)….
A rabbit in cargo??…. hmmm not too sure, now that i know how fragile they can be…
(I’d drop them up to GinaJenny to take care of…. lololololol.)
Bam, don’t laugh, YOU’RE not too far away in the worldwide scale of things !!!!

Don’t worry Q8, Chewie will be fine. I just read an article that stated he arrived healthy in the USA but was accidentally placed in a freezer hold after he arrived which is what caused his death
What i want to know is how can anyone be so dumb?
Don’t fly United.
Oh god… how awful! Poor bunbun slowly froze to death ![]()
I know, it’s so awful
Here’s the link for anyone interested in reading the article: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4457524/Giant-rabbit-Simon-died-United-staff-FROZE-him.html
Oh my goodness, I’m horrified ![]()
Azerane – I read one on how he supposedly collapsed while waiting for his connecter flight to come.
United has quite a bad record with pets, actually.
Yes, at the bottom of one article I read about it it said they have the worst pet safety record for any airline. Either that or second worst, the other one was Hawaii airlines.
I saw an article where an employee said that the rabbit was accidentally locked in a cold room (0-2 degrees Celcius) overnight. If a rabbit isn’t acclimated to that temp, the sudden change could well kill it. United has denied that this happened.
Lots of people say lots of things for media attention and their 15mins of fame.
Zero degrees, thats COLD
! And its not like a dwarf rabbit, Simon must have had a dog crate. Not easy to misplace.
Anyhoo…. sad and very sad. Who knows, he may have had a heart problem and died at home even if he hadn’t taken the flight… just saying.
The truth will never be known. ![]()
what i didn’t realize the bunny froze to death
I didnt like his crate. It was a wooden crate with a soft floor. I would have padded the sides and ceiling. Thats what i do when i ship birds.
